England v Sri Lanka, World T20, Group 1, Chittagong March 26, 2014

No extra spin for Sri Lanka

22

Sri Lanka will resist the temptation the bolster their spin attack against England even though the opposition have a poor record against the turning ball. The conditions in Chittagong, which has offered help for quicker bowlers, will persuade Dinesh Chandimal to persist with the balance of attack that dispatched Netherlands for 39 and overcame South Africa.

That does not mean Sri Lanka will be short of spin options as Chandimal has Ajantha Mendis, Sachithra Senanayake and Tillakaratne Dilshan to call on, but the two others in the squad, the experienced Rangana Herath and legspinner Seekkuge Prasanna, will remain on the bench despite England's frailties against most forms of spin.

"These wickets are totally different to Dhaka," Chandimal said. "There was a lot of grass on the pitch in the last four or five games and there is a little bit of seam for the fast bowlers so we cannot go with more than two [specialist] spinners in these conditions."

"All the players in the squad are fit but we have not yet taken a decision on the final eleven. We need to assess the conditions tomorrow night and then decide on our best 11."

Chandimal picked Lasith Malinga and his trademark selection of yorkers and slower balls as the key weapon against England but retained respect for what Stuart Broad's team can offer even though they have only won one of their seven T20Is this year.

"He [Malinga] will come in and bowl at any time and take good wickets for us. The way he bowls it is difficult for anyone to hit sixes off him especially off the first ball.

"England are a good T20 side and we have special game plans for them. We never underestimate England they have specialised T20 players like Eoin Morgan and Alex Hales. We have something up our sleeves."

Chandimal has also challenged his team to maintain the standards they have laid down in the early stages of the tournament and not take their eye off the ball.

"Winning the first match was important. We carried that momentum into the second game against Netherlands where all the players performed very well. In the second game we showed what our standard was. We know if we win one of our last two games we can make it to the semi-finals but we are looking forward to winning both."

No change is needed for SL. Good team as it is

  • on March 27, 2014, 9:17 GMT

I would rather prefer Rangana Herath in mendis place as he has a lot of variations and really spins the balls in quick tracks.

Chandimal is the BEST T20 Captain and for that matter will be a GREAT Captain for Sri Lanka after Arjuna.... All the others did not have that Silent Assassin or Killer instinct in them...Forget his form.. he is a too good a cricketer to be tagged in that way.,.. He will deliver this time and the team is rallied around him and giving their fullest support,.....That is more important than anything here..Already his captaincy in the last 2 games ahve clearly shown that he is clearly above the rest!

forget about captaincy he is not even close to be T20 player , there are plenty of young talent around bring them on , enough is enough how many chances are we gonna give to our great Mr.Captain god know whats his role in the team , good for nothing but acts as if he is a the GUY ...

Thirimanne is in good form while Dilshan isn't. Prasanna would probably be a better allround option than TP. So SL XI should be:

    1) KJP 2) Thiri 3) Sanga 4) Mahela 5) Chandi (let's face it, they really have no intention of replacing him whatsoever) 6) Mathews 7) Prasanna 8) Kula 9) Sena 10) Slinga 11) Mendis

  • CricinfoSriLanka on March 27, 2014, 4:04 GMT

England are good at facing seamers. We already have 3 seamers (Malinga, Kulasekara, Mathews) so it would be handy if we have more spin options to handle English batsmen. Herath is the best option but we can't play too many bowlers..Therefore Sekkuge Prasanna should play as an allrounder for the place of Thisara. 1) Kusal 2) Dilshan 3)Mahela 4)Sanga 5) Mathews 6) Chandimal 7) Prasanna 8) Kulasekara 9) Sachitra 10) Mendis/Herath 11) Malinga

  • checkOnCricket on March 27, 2014, 3:47 GMT

England can still make it if they play sensibly. All they have to do is keep scoring just singles or 2 in Malinga's our overs and target all other bowlers.

They can target mendis, Mathews and kulasekara. Morgan, Bopara and Moeen Ali are better players of spin and hoping to see a good Fight but still my mind says it would be a one sider with srilanka all the way..

hw could we believe that dilshan is surely out of form and also he is not 100% fit.but the poor captain and selectors giving him so many in this kind of a very important tournament..this is crazy...

Good luck SL. Win the match for us and the championship as well. Hopefully Malinga will do some damage but surely one bowler will stand up for the team as always.

Dilshan should be dropped as he was unable to middle shots even against the Dutch. SL should go in with two pacies in Malinga and I feel they should stick to T Perera, even though his batting is out I feel he has developed as a bowler so all SL needs is to hope he will be able to dispatch a few over the ropes. As for spinners...or to hell with it, SL have a basket full to choose from. However never count out the poms guys. We :-) can be deadly.

England team is used it Srilankan spinners and Mendis is peace of cake for them. They have to care about fielding.

  • on March 26, 2014, 21:02 GMT

Beware of any team in T20. Any team can win on that particular day. This can be Engkan's 2nd win . Don't take it easy.

  • on March 26, 2014, 18:41 GMT

Herath is the best spinner at the moment. He should be there.

  • nilb on March 26, 2014, 16:56 GMT

Sri Lanka should a remove a player not in form to make way for Seekuge Prasanna even to play just as a batsmen. Otherwise his abilities are wasted in this tournament.

  • rahulgubbala on March 26, 2014, 16:18 GMT

Morgan is going to win it for England!! Only guy who ca survive Malinga's threat.

  • on March 26, 2014, 16:08 GMT

Why din't just keep quiet? You are only passing hints to England: now they know whom to face & they will prepare accordingly. You don't score either; what are you last scores?

  • SLMaster on March 26, 2014, 15:49 GMT

Well Chandimal can bring Prasanna or Hearath at the expense of Perera. Both the spinners can bat and they are great bowlers. They cannot get worse than Perera...as Perera is out of form...

  • on March 26, 2014, 15:25 GMT

mendis will also be a big threat for english batsmen...but i dont think eng z a bad team but they are out of form these days..

  • on March 26, 2014, 14:03 GMT

Chance for Chandimal and Dilshan to play themselves back to form. And maybe replace TP with Prasanna...
