Like Alister McDermott, Michael Johnson won a Queensland rookie contract while still at school in 2008. Johnson, then a year 12 student at Brisbane's State High, gained the deal after being named in an honorary Australian under-17 side following 273 runs in the 2007-08 national championships. A tall batsman at 190cm, he played a full season with the Beenleigh-Logan club and the following year was part of the QAS squad.
