Daniel Sams

A quirk of Daniel Sams' career is that his professional debut came in New Zealand, for Canterbury in the Plunket Shield - after that team asked NSW if they had any spare bowlers during an injury crisis. A handful of first-class games after that, Sams turned his attention to forging a career as a T20 specialist with his sharp left-arm pace, deceptive variations and immense power as a batter.

His T20 debut came late in 2017, and he claimed four wickets in his first outing for Sydney Sixers against cross-town rivals Sydney Thunder, who then became his long-term BBL home. He was the leading wicket-taker in 2019-20 BBL and his Australia debut came the following season against India, although his international career never quite took off.

Memorably he hit 41 off 15 balls to nearly steal a T20I from New Zealand in Dunedin. One of his standout domestic performances also came with the bat during the 2021-22 season, when he hammered 98 not out off 44 balls against Melbourne Renegades.

Overseas, Sams has turned out for Mumbai Indians in the IPL, his most successful season being 2022, when he claimed 13 wickets in 11 matches. He has also featured extensively in the T20 Blast.
