Parvez Hossain Emon struck an efficient 67, Towhid Hridoy held the middle overs together with his 51, and Tanzim Hasan struck some powerful late boundaries, as Bangladesh scrapped their way to 248.
On a track given to spin, and at a venue notoriously unkind to chasing teams, Bangladesh's total could prove challenging for the hosts. Bangladesh strengthened their spin stocks, adding offspinning-allrounder Shamim Hossain to the XI at the expense of senior batter Litton Das. In Wednesday's match, Bangladesh fell 77 runs short of the 244 Sri Lanka had scored in the first innings.
Of Sri Lanka's bowlers, Asitha Fernando was the most incisive, finishing with figures of 4 for 35 off nine overs, as he further entrenched himself as Sri Lanka's leading cross-format seamer.
Wanindu Hasaranga had another good outing with the ball, bowling Bangladesh's best batter, Emon, with a googly, before trapping two tailenders lbw. His 9.1 overs cost 60. Dushmantha Chameera, who didn't play the first ODI, was also impressive at times, bowling hostile lengths at over 140kph. He finished with 1 for 37 off seven.
Bangladesh's best partnership came early on. Tanzid Hasan had been out edging an Asitha slower ball in the third over, but Emon took the reins in a brisk 63-run partnership to which Najmul Hossain Shanto's contribution was only 14. Emon preyed on errors of length especially. He hit three sixes, two of them over deep midwicket, and scored 72% of his runs on legside.
Hridoy was more cautious than Emon had been, with Asitha, in particular, taking out other batters in the middle order. But he still prospered mostly square of the wicket, hitting just two offside fours in an innings in which he struck at 74.
Shamim and Jaker Ali also scratched out 20s, as Hasaranga, Asitha, and Chameera combined through the late middle overs to make regular breakthroughs. No. 8 batter Tanzim struck the ball most cleanly of all Bangladesh's batters however, making 33 not out off 21 balls as Sri Lanka hunted for the final few wickets.
He hit two sixes down the ground off Hasaranga, before the legspinner caught Mustafizur Rahman in front, later in that 46th over of the innings.
