Toss South Africa chose to bat vs Australia
Aiden Markram, standing in as South Africa skipper with
Temba Bavuma rested from the second ODI against Australia in Mackay owing to the ongoing management of his hamstring, opted to bat first after winning the toss.
Bavuma was one of two changes for South Africa from the team that won game one. Offspinner Prenelan Subrayen has been left out after he was reported for
a suspect action on ODI debut in game one.
He is still available to play despite needing to undergo testing in Brisbane this week but South Africa coach Shukri Conrad confirmed they would rest him from the last two games to let him focus on the testing. Left-arm orthodox spinner Senuran Muthusamy came in as a replacement while Tony de Zorzi has replaced Bavuma and will bat at No. 3.
Australia skipper Mitchell Marsh revealed at the toss that he would have batted first if he had won the toss, something he has never done as a skipper in international cricket, citing a very good-looking batting strip in Mackay. Australia have only made one change with Xavier Bartlett replacing Ben Dwarshuis, who has been rested.
There are no long-term concerns over Bavuma, with CSA releasing a statement before the game as to the reason for him sitting out.
"This decision is part of his workload management, as he recovered from a hamstring strain which he sustained during the WTC final in June," the statement said. "Although he experienced no discomfort during the first ODI on Tuesday, the Proteas medical team recommended he be rested for the second match."
