China expansion put into perspective

Much has been written of late about the progress of China in cricket, and this week the People's Daily reports that the growth will see the game introduced into more schools in the coming year.

But amid all the euphoria/concern at the news - and which one depends on your view of China's growing involvment in a variety of sports - a note of caution was sounded by Asian Cricket Council (ACC) development officer Rumesh Ratnayake.
"On a scale of one to 100, Australia are maybe a 98, Sri Lanka a 95. Here we're talking a three or a four."

It's cricket ... but not as we know it

"The pitch was not exactly as clipped as Lord’s, the ball was borrowed from another sport and the British team crashed out early, but participants in the The St. Petersburg Cricket Cup 2006 brought to the city the passion of one of the world’s most popular and perplexing sports."
The ball they used was a tennis ball, partly because cricket balls are hard to come by, partly because without protective equipment, it was felt that a cricket ball could cause some serious damage!
Elsewhere, it is reported that cricket in St Petersburg has all but died with the disappearance of the main organiser ... along with almost all the club kit!

Tanzania plays host to qualifying series

Tanzania has been confirmed the host of this year’s World Cup qualifying series for the Africa region, which gets underway in August in Dar es Salaam.

Tanzania Cricket Association (TCA), Chairman Zully Rehemtulah said on Saturday that their confirmation follows an assessment they had carried out in relation to the standard of the pitch.
He said the tournament would be held at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) grounds, a decision that has been reached after a series of negotiations between TCA and UDSM officials.
Rehemtulah who is also the Cricket instructor, said lack of an acceptable pitch worried them a lot.
