Philander saves the day ... again

Vernon Philander moved to within one run of his highest score, which he made only yesterday, to help Western Province stave off defeat against Griqualand West at Kimberley

Griqualand West recovered from 134 for 7 to post 311 against Western Province at Kimberley. Mbulelo Bosman scored his maiden hundred, and the captain Wendell Bossenger - who resumed after retiring hurt overnight with a suspected fractured nose - battled on bravely for 45 to frustrate WP, who then made a dismal start to their second dig as Alan Kruger took three quick wickets. Again it was Vernon Philander who rescued the innings, moving to within one of his career-best score, which he made only yesterday.
Eastern Province 230 for 8 dec and 166 lead Boland 109 and 138 for 5 by 149 runs
Scorecard
Boland, 121 behind on first innings at Paarl, fought back strongly to bowl Eastern Province out for 166, setting up a stiff target of 288. Jacques van Wyk and Henry Davids picked up three wickets apiece. But a terrible start in the run-chase reduced Boland to 18 for 3, and they were further hindered when Rayno Arendse was run out for 33. Warren Swan batted well for his 44, but when he was out leg-before Boland were struggling at 98 for 5. Wesley Euley (31*) and Brandon Adams (16*) lifted them to 138 for 5 by the close, but they need another 150 to win.

Australia ahead on difficult wicket

On a pitch where strokeplay was difficult and survival was an achievement, Australia eked out a 99-run lead after dismissing India for 104 at the Wankhede Stadium

On a pitch where strokeplay became Russian roulette, Australia batted themselves into a position of strength even as 18 wickets fell in the 95 overs bowled. Jason Gillespie and Nathan Hauritz, the new boy, were the standout performers as India were bowled out in the morning for a paltry 104, and then Damien Martyn produced a superb 55 to wrest the initiative as India dropped four clangers in the middle of a slipshod fielding display. Anil Kumble picked up another five-for without bowling particularly well, but the run deficit may prove too much for India on a surface from which mushroom clouds of dust were exploding each time the ball pitched.
Martyn had made just 11 when he prodded tentatively at a beautiful delivery from Murali Kartik, but Gautam Gambhir at silly point couldn't hold on to a low chance. It was a costly lapse, as he added 44 for the third wicket with Matthew Hayden and 36 for the sixth with Adam Gilchrist, whose blistering 18-ball 26 pushed Australia's lead past 50.

After putting up a reasonable fight for most of the third day, despite two suicidal run-outs, Zimbabwe capitulated feebly after tea to the pace of Shane Bond, who took 4 for 48, and went down to New Zealand by an innings and 46 runs at Bulawayo to lose the Test series 2-0.
The morning session saw New Zealand fail to reach 500, perhaps the minimum score they had been aiming for, as their last three wickets fell quickly and they were dismissed for 484. Heath Streak took 4 for 73 and Blessing Mahwire 3 for 121. This included the wicket of Nathan Astle for a disciplined 128, taken by surprise by a ball from Streak that cut back to bowl him between bat and pad. Zimbabwe went in to bat 253 runs behind and with defeat virtually inevitable.

New South Wales registered their first win of the season with an emphatic innings victory as they bowled Western Australia out for 148 at the SCG today. Only Murray Goodwin, who also made a half-century in the first innings, was able to delay the impressive Blues attack.
Stuart MacGill removed the opener Mike Hussey in his first over of the day and Western Australia, resuming at 0 for 23, were in more trouble when Stuart Clark dismissed Scott Meuleman, Marcus North and Shaun Marsh. Goodwin held on until shortly before lunch and after the break Matthew Nicholson chipped in with three wickets.
Trevor Bayliss, the New South Wales coach, said he hoped the match, and the amazing 219-run partnership between MacGill and Dominic Thornely, would kick-start their season. "After that we never put a foot wrong for the rest of the game," Bayliss said. "I'm fairly confident for the rest of the season. I think we'll be playing some pretty good cricket from here on in."

Wisdom Siziba, Matabeleland's opener, scored an unbeaten 40 to guide his side to a nine-wicket victory over Manicaland on the third day of their Logan Cup match at the Bulawayo Athletic Club.
Siziba struck seven fours as Matabeleland reached their target of 70 in only 56 minutes. With nothing to lose, Siziba was not his usual cautious self and from the outset had a go at the bowling. Matabeleland lost their only wicket in the run chase when offspinner Stuart Matsikenyeri had Duffin taken at first slip by Steven Wright for 17.
Afterwards, the two provinces played in a limited-overs match, an idea mooted by Phil Simmons, Zimbabwe's coach, who was watching.

Mashonaland just shade honours

Mashonaland and Midlands closely fought throughout the day at Kwekwe Sports Club

Under cloudless blue skies, but with a breeze to temper the heat, Mashonaland and Midlands fought closely throughout the day at Kwekwe Sports Club. Good bowling from Ed Rainsford, who took 4 for 36, was matched by a determined 73 from Tatenda Taibu, Mashonaland's captain, whose side looked in the stronger position at the close after capturing four Midlands wickets for 82 in response to their first-innings total of 277.
Alester Maregwede, Midlands' captain, put Mashonaland, the defending Logan Cup champions, in to bat after winning the toss, hoping that recent rain would leave the pitch damp underneath and help his seamers during the first hour. The ball did move, but there was no early breakthrough while Brendan Taylor held together the top order with a canny half-century. Barney Rogers, a returned rebel, looked in good form with 30 before running himself out, while the allrounder Cham Chibhabha scored 48 before hitting his own wicket.
Douglas Hondo bowled well to take two of the four wickets to fall before the close. He trapped Maregwede leg-before with the final ball of the day, and this tilted the balance of an otherwise even match towards Mashonaland.

Pakistan duo blow away hapless Middlesex

Sussex bowled out Middlesex twice in a day to move to the top of the County Championship

Five days ago Middlesex appeared to be on the verge of a win over Nottinghamshire which would have lifted them to second in the County Championship. After yesterday's rout by Sussex, they are staring at the very real possibility of relegation. Sussex, meanwhile, jumped from fifth in the table to overtake Nottinghamshire at the top courtesy of this two-day win.
In 88 overs, Middlesex were bowled out twice by a Sussex side which concentrated on the basics of line and length while the batsmen showed little application and even less stomach for a fight. The final margin - an innings and 232 runs - did not flatter Sussex, nor did it reflect unfairly on Middlesex.
The Pakistan duo of Rana Naved-ul-Hasan and Mushtaq Ahmed ripped through a Middlesex side which offered even less resistance than Zimbabwe at their worst. Bowling with venom from the Nursery End, Naved-ul-Hasan wobbled Middlesex's top order first time round, and then blew away the middle order when they followed on with four wickets in six balls. At the other end, the wily Mushtaq, who took ten wickets in this fixture last summer, proved a total mystery to the batsmen, finishing with match figures of 9 for 68. Robin Martin-Jenkins briefly got in on the act, taking the last four first-innings wickets in 18 balls after lunch, again through concentrating on bowling straight.

Kent recover for a three-wicket win

Kent secured a three-wicket win against Bangladesh A on the second day at Canterbury

Kent recovered from another wobbly batting performance to secure a three-wicket win against Bangladesh A on the second day at Canterbury. Led by a half-century from Neil Dexter and 47 from Michael Carberry, Kent overcame another menacing performance from Bangladesh's new-ball pairing of Shadahat Hossain and Syed Rasel, who shared three wickets apiece, with Rasel completing the impressive match figures of 10 for 91.
Kent were indebted to their lower-order in each innings of the match. Resuming on a shaky 123 for 8, Kent stretched their score to 153, thanks to Martin Saggers' 44, then set about denting Bangladesh's hopes of a decisive lead by bowling them out for 155 in reply. Shahriar Nafees opened and top-scored with 58, but no-one else could pass 15, as Robert Joseph whipped through the innings with 5 for 19.
Chasing 188 for victory, Kent were shaken by two early blows from Shadahat, and then lost four for 29 as the middle-order imploded. But the 17-year-old wicketkeeper, Paul Dixey, combined with David Stiff to secure the win with three wickets standing.

England U19 seal series whitewash

England Under 19 completed a 3-0 series whitewash over Sri Lanka Under 19 with a comprehensive 179-run

England Under 19 completed a 3-0 series whitewash over Sri Lanka Under 19 with a comprehensive 179-run win. However, a defiant, unbeaten 123 from Angelo Mathews, the Sri Lankan captain, held England up as he and Charles Fernando added 100 for the ninth wicket.
Sri Lanka had been set an impossible 510 after Moeen Ali had sped to a century from only 56 balls during the morning session. He and Joe Denly raced to a partnership of 111 to set up the declaration.
Tom Smith then set about working his way through the Sri Lankan top order. He claimed both the openers before Ashan Peiris offered positive resistance with 74 from 96 balls. But when he was bowled by Smith, Sri Lanka quickly slumped to 200 for 8.
