A record stand of 223 between Mark Chilton and Iain Sutcliffe gave Lancashire a brilliant start in their first innings response to Yorkshire's 417 all out. In what was another gritty and hard-fought day at Old Trafford, Lancashire were made to work hard for their runs, as Yorkshire's bowlers toiled valiantly, watched by a decently-sized crowd.
Yorkshire bowled with admirable intent throughout the afternoon, and had to wait until the 74th over before Sutcliffe became their first victim. Tim Bresnan pushed one across Sutcliffe's defence when he was seven short of his hundred, feathering an outside edge to a delighted Ismail Dawood. Sutcliffe and Chilton's stand broke the previous best opening stand in Roses matches, 181 between Harry Makepeace and Reg Spooner, which had stood since 1912. Chilton, whose excellent innings was his second Roses hundred of the year and his third of the season, remained unbeaten on 130.

Maregwede ton fails to stave off defeat for Midlands

Mashonaland completed a convincing 188-run victory over Midlands at Kwekwe Sports Club at the start of the extra half-hour on the third day of four

Mashonaland completed a convincing 188-run victory over Midlands at Kwekwe Sports Club at the start of the extra half-hour on the third day of four. They set Midlands a near impossible target of 532 and bowled them out for 343. The highlight of the day, though, was a brilliant century by the Midlands captain Alester Maregwede, the second of his career.
Mashonaland batted on for an hour in the morning, before declaring at 448 for 4 with Tatenda Taibu on 76 and Elton Chigumbura dashing 64 off 46 balls. Maregwede came in at 32 for 2 and immediately set about the bowling, taking a particular liking to the legspinner Graeme Cremer, whom he identified as the most dangerous bowler on a pitch which was still good, but was taking some turn. Maregwede raced to his fifty off 35 balls and then his hundred off 88, before finally driving a catch to mid-on. His 107 contained 12 fours and four sixes, all of them powerful straight hits.
Midlands continued to fight, with Craig Ervine hitting 67 and the allrounder Prosper Utseya 89, before he fell to a freakish catch at short leg. Cremer took the last wicket and finished with figures of 6 for 147.

With Charl Langeveldt injuring his back, David Terbrugge gave the South African selectors a timely reminder of his form as his 5 for 42 bowled the Titans into submission at Potchefstroom. Batting first after winning the toss, Daryl Cullinan (70) and Justin Kemp (42) briefly stopped the Titans' slide with a 83-run fourth-wicket partnership, but the Lions were evntually bowled out for 204 - Werner Coetsee and Garth Roe shared the remaining wickets. The Lions were 9 for 0 when bad light ended play 11 overs early.
Warriors 40 for 2 trail Western Province-Boland 206 (Gibbs 76, Hayward 4-45, Zondeki 3-50) by 166 runs
Scorecard
At Newlands, the Warriors pace duo of Mornantau Hayward and Monde Zondeki proved too good for Western Province-Boland, with only Herschelle Gibbs and Derrin Bassage coming to terms with a difficult pitch. Batting at No. 4, Gibbs joined Bassage at 0 for 2, and they added 123 runs before Bassage was caught behind for 45. Gibbs followed soon for 76, an innings that included 52 runs in sparkling boundaries. A further 50-run partnership between Conde Lange (37) and Rory Kleinveldt (24) assisted in getting the home team to 206. At the close, Warriors had progressed to 40 for 2 with Klienveldt bagging both wickets.

On a day blighted by unseasonal and intermittent drizzle, India struggled to 2 for 22 in the 11 overs possible after Rahul Dravid had won the toss and elected to bat. Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar were at the crease when bad light stopped play after India had lost both openers with just 11 on the board.
With morning showers having muddied the practice pitches and the areas near the boundary rope, play didn't start until 2pm. After an early lunch, Australia had gathered in a huddle a while before the toss, with Glenn McGrath presenting the Baggy Green cap to Nathan Hauritz, the 390th player to represent Australia.

Fast bowler Mluleki Nkala picked up four wickets and Mark Vermeulen cracked an unbeaten half-century to put Matabeleland in the driving seat on the first day of their Logan Cup match against Manicaland at Bulawayo Athletic Club. Nkala finished with 4 for 33 as Manicaland were bowled out for 157, and Matabeleland closed on 160 for 3 thanks largely to Vermeulen's unbeaten 83.
Nkala won the toss and elected to field, and his move nearly paid dividends as early as the fist ball of the match when Stuart Matsikenyeri cut him to point, but the ball fell short of Keith Dabengwa. Matabeleand didn't have to wait long for the breakthrough, however, as Johnson Marumisa fell to the second ball of the second over when he edged a delivery from Chris Mpofu to wicketkeeper Charles Coventry for a duck.
Dion Ebrahim joined Matsikenyeri and survived a hostile spell from Mupariwa and Mpofu, but as the bowlers started to tire, the runs began to flow. The partnership was eventually ended when Matsikenyeri was trapped leg-before by Mupariwa for 15. The big wicket of Ebrahim was taken by Nkala, courtesy of another catch by Coventry (81 for 3) and then Gavin Ewing had Andre Soma caught at silly mid-on by Terrence Duffin for 14 (101 for 4).

Dominic Thornely broke a domestic sixes record, shared a 219-run 10th-wicket partnership with Stuart MacGill, reached an unbeaten 261 and then joined his New South Wales team-mates as they forced Western Australia to follow on at the SCG.
With 11 sixes Thornely broke the mark of David Hookes, who hit 10 for South Australia against New South Wales in 1985-86. Thornely, 26, predicted the night before that he would pass the record and, resuming on 204, smashed the ninth and 19th balls of the day, both from the left-arm chinaman Beau Casson, over the fence. "The spin bowler came on and bowled both balls in the area I didn't mind," Thornely said. "It's nice to be able to break the record as David Hookes was known for his big-hitting ability."
Thornely broke another Australian domestic record when he and MacGill, who made only 27, combined for their incredible partnership. Only the New South Wales pair of Alan Kippax and Hal Hooker have made more for the last wicket, with their world-record stand of 307 coming against Victoria in Melbourne in 1928-29.

Africa XI beat Asia XI by two runs in Centurion

Shaun Pollock and Jacques Kallis took three wickets apiece as Africa XI squeaked past Asian XI by two runs in the inaugural game of the Afro-Asian Cup at Centurion. In a low-scoring game, the hosts were bowled out for 198 in the 45th over, with Ashwell Prince top-scoring with 78. In reply, Asian XI stumbled to 96 for 6 in the face of some incisive swing bowling from Shaun Pollock, and cameos from the lower order couldn't prevent the home team from stealing a slim victory and a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Pollock struck three times in one over to reduce the visitors to 52 for 3, and with both Inzamam-ul-Haq and Shahid Afridi falling to poor shots, Asian XI were six down at the halfway mark. Abdul Razzaq and Anil Kumble put on 56 runs to begin rebuilding the innings, before Zaheer Khan (20 not out off 21 balls) and Shoaib Akhtar (15 off 13) brought the team to the verge of a thrilling victory. But it was not to be. With three runs to get from two overs, the young fast bowler Dale Steyn uprooted Ashish Nehra's middle stump to end the innings at 196, and sent the sparse Centurion crowd home happy.

Matabeleland within sight of victory

A brilliant 102 from Mark Vermeulen followed by excellent bowling put Matabeleland on the verge of victory after two days of their Logan Cup clash against Manicaland at Bulawayo Athletic Club

A brilliant 102 from Mark Vermeulen followed by excellent bowling put Matabeleland on the verge of victory after two days of their Logan Cup clash against Manicaland at Bulawayo Athletic Club.
Vermeulen's hundred was the anchor innings as Matabeleland scored 253 to take a first-innings lead of 96, and then Manicaland were bundled out for 165, leaving Matabeleland with two days to score 70.
Matabeleland resumed on 160 for 3, and Vermeulen, 83 at the close last night, made slow progress as wickets fell. Blessing Mahwire ripped through the middle order, finishing with 7 for 64, but Vermeulen finally brought up his hundred with a beautiful cover-driven four off left-arm seamer Allan Mwayenga before falling to Patrick Gada. The other meaningful contribution came from Gavin Ewing with 38 as the innings subsided.

Rasel and Saggers in the wickets

Kent struggled to 123 for 8 in reply to Bangladesh A's 185 at Canterbury

Bangladesh A's bowlers staged a superb comeback against a young Kent side, reducing them to 40 for 6, before a late order rally boosted them to 123 for 8 by the close. Syed Rasel was the star with the ball, claiming for 5 for 35 after the Bangladesh batting had been undone by Martin Saggers, who returned 5 for 48 including Tushar Imran for a blazing 86.
There was little sign of the wicket surge to follow when Bangladesh progressed to 62 for 1 after winning the toss but they soon slumped to 84 for 4. Tushar staged a recovery in partnership with Nazimuddin, the pair adding 75. Tushar stroked 16 fours in his 90-ball innings, before Saggers had him caught by the debutant Neil Dexter, and Nazimuddin was eventually caught off David Stiff.
The tail did not offer much resistance and neither did Kent's top order as Rasel and Shahadat Hossain caused problems with the new ball. Michael Carberry and Kevin Jones - another debutant - registered golden ducks and three figures was a long way off at 40 for 6.

Wood and White give Yorkshire the edge

Yorkshire reached 324 for 6 after a hard-fought first day in the Roses match at Old Trafford

The scenes at Old Trafford were a world away from the high-octane action during the closing stages of the pulsating third Test, but the opening day of a typically hard-fought and gritty Roses clash produced some intriguing action. Matthew Wood and Craig White held the Yorkshire batting together as Lancashire's bowlers chipped away each time a partnership was threatening to develop.
At the close White was content with Yorkshire's position: "I'd have taken that score at the start of the day," he told Sky Sports. "The Lancashire bowlers did well and it wasn't always easy for us. I don't like to set too many targets but it would be nice to push on and get full batting points [400 runs in 130 overs] tomorrow morning."
