With Jacques Kallis pacing his innings to perfection and Jonty Rhodes scampering hither and thither, South Africa made tracking down Sri Lanka's best score of the series seem pretty much routine as they won the third Standard Bank one-day international at Boland Park by eight wickets on Tuesday.

It was never quite as easy as that and it was by no means South Africa's most polished performance in the field, but with Kallis and Rhodes apparently nerveless, Sri Lanka were again unable to check the onward surge of a supremely confident home team.
Sri Lanka's tour is not over, not just yet. By winning the next three one-dayers and the third Test they could square both series. But it takes some leap of faith to believe that Sanath Jayasuriya's tourists still have something in reserve to draw upon.

West Indies' cricketers have made a return to the winners' list with a four wicket win over Australia 'A' at the Adelaide Oval tonight.
Victory was achieved barely before the newly constructed permanent Adelaide Oval lights could take effect, as the visitors wrapped up the match by 8:20pm with more than eight overs to spare.
Marlon Samuels (45) continued to show that he is the find of the tour, after coming out as a replacement for the original squad. He and Wavell Hinds (29) set up the successful pursuit of the target, adding seventy-one runs for the third wicket from 115 balls. This was after the West Indians had been 2/28 from eleven overs at the dinner break, having lost Sherwin Campbell (8) as he lashed to point and Brian Lara (9), who snicked Damien Fleming low to first slip.
Hinds and the West Indians had a substantial spot of luck when he was on ten. He edged Paul Wilson to Brad Hodge's left hand at second slip but the Victorian dropped the difficult chance. Had the catch stuck, the Windies would have been 3/30 and in a fragile state. It was a piece of much-needed good fortune and, as the partnership grew, so the spirits of the Caribbean outfit visibly lifted.

Karachi Blues, who are battling for survival in the Grade-I, let some of the initiative slipped away on the first day of the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy match against Sargodha at the UBL Sports Complex here on Monday.
Sargodha recovered to reach 180 in their first innings after being reduced to 67 for seven an hour into the afternoon session.
Karachi Blues, in reply, survived two overs to close on two without loss. But Suleman Huda might have perished LBW to pacer Umair Hasan had umpire Sajjad Asghar not declared a no ball.
After electing to bat first on a slow track, Sargodha lost the top five batsmen for only 26 runs on the board. Stand-in skipper Naved Latif, who amassed 394 against Gujranwala barely eight weeks ago, fell to left-arm paceman Imranullah for a first-ball duck. Imranullah bowled a fine opening spell to claim three wickets which left Sargodha taking lunch at 46 for five.

Delhi took a strong grip over their Under-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy
semifinal against Hyderabad at the Calcutta Cricket & Football Club ground
on Tuesday.
After inserting their opponents into bat, Delhi dismissed Hyderabad for 139
in all of 85.3 overs. Openers Pritpal Singh and Shikar Dhawan proceeded to
complete a satisfying day for Delhi, knocking off 58 without being
separated, before stumps were drawn.
Hyderabad lost opener Prasant Peter in the second over of the match after
which Imran Khan and skipper Ambati Rayudu added 47 for the second wicket.
The last nine wickets plunged for just 92 runs with Sumit Kapoor doing most
of the damage, claiming figures of 6/34. Khan's 29 was the top score.
Hyderabad used seven bowlers in the 25 overs they hurled down, but with
scant success. At close of play, Pritpal was batting on 35 (80 balls, 6
fours) and Dhawan on 22 (70 balls, 3 fours).

The first victory of the Caribbean tour was achieved nine overs after lunch allowing the players the luxury of a free afternoon on the beach before preparations start for the second round match against Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday.
Resuming on their overnight total of 35 for two, the inexperienced home side suffered a blow when captain Richie Richardson, the former West Indies skipper, was forced out of action with a back spasm.

By the time the sun set over Queen's Park in Grenada, the air was thick with the spicy scent of victory for England A after claiming the third day's honours with bat and ball, in the Busta International Series match against West Indies B.
The lead had extended to 328 and Mark Alleyne must be fancying his chances of bowling out this young West Indies side in good time on the last day to record his first significant victory of the tour and open their Busta account.
The loss of three wickets in the final session was predictable as the instruction went out to step up the run rate to enable an early declaration and give England's bowlers a chance for a pop at the West Indies openers before stumps were drawn.

The 'prodigal son' of West Indies' cricket returned to the place where he made his last international appearance to repay his huge army of excited supporters with a century against Barbados yesterday.
Carl Hooper, who shocked the cricket world when he announced his international retirement almost two years ago, triggered wild scenes when he stepped onto the ground just after 11 a.m. By the time he walked off just before 5:45 p.m., he was still at the crease and most of 3 000 spectators had been delighted that their hero had completed his fourth first-class hundred on the ground where he marked his debut 16 years ago with a similar landmark.
At times yesterday, the Guyana captain was at his brilliant best.
There were times, however, when he was troubled and there was high drama when he was in the 90s. Still, a hundred is a hundred and his 50th at the first-class level, seventh on the regional scene and fifth against Barbados has given Guyana a big boost in their effort to overhaul Barbados' 422.

A phenomenal collapse woke up the sleepy spectators in this early New Year Shell Trophy match between Canterbury and Central Districts.
Canterbury lost five top order wickets in just eight scoreless deliveries, with both CD bowlers Michael Mason and Gareth West simultaneously on a hat-trick. They had taken consecutive wickets with the final balls of each of their fifth overs to be in this extremely unusual situation.
Canterbury eventually struggled to a below par 220, Mason taking his second five wicket bag of the season (5-71) and West grabbing a career best 4-62.
Gary Stead saw off hat-trick balls from each of the pacemen and went on to make a cultured 91 in 173 balls, to give the Black Cap selectors yet another reminder of his class.

The existence of luck as a force in sport, as a measurable quantity and a determinant of success and failure, is a concept which can often provoke warm debate.
There are those who dismiss luck as a phantom composed of equal parts of subjectivity and superstition and as a notion which only belittles great achievement. There are those who believe the finest players in any sport make their own luck through skill and boldness and those, at the other pole of the argument, who believe in luck with almost fanatic religiosity.
The question of how much luck influenced the relative positions of Auckland and Wellington at the end of the first day of their Shell Trophy match at the Basin Reserve today might easily ignite an energetic discussion among those respective factions. Because there is reasonable cause for argument that an act of fortune, good or bad depending on one's perspective and belief, had a part in deciding how well each team was placed when the day ended.
Auckland were 248-8 at stumps after Wellington had won the toss and bowled, taking into the match an attack comprised of four seamers - three of them current or former internationals - and one spinner, leaving their second spinner, Mark Jefferson as 12th man.

When Matthew Horne won the toss for Otago this morning, and put Northern Districts in to bat in their Shell Trophy match on a beautiful warm summer's day at Carisbrook, many present looked at each other and wondered. The pitch has been made for batting in recent seasons and this current effort of the groundsman Mark Perham looked no exception.
But, the amateur pundits have to bow to the professional knowledge of Horne for it proved to be a most sound decision. Evidently early morning dampness did exist although the pitch is confidently expected to last four days of the game.
Northern Districts provided a slow mornings batting and the score at lunch was 84-2 with Joseph Yovich on 33. James Marshall had scored 20 and Mark Bailey 23 but the Otago bowlers had stuck well to their task especially considering Shayne O'Connor had left the field with a tendon injury in his knee and may not take any further part in the game.
After lunch Northern Districts continued cautiously but failed to make any substantial inroads into the Otago attack and the only real bright spot for them was when Simon Doull clubbed the Otago attack towards the end of the innings and scored a good 38. Yovich was dismissed for 42 and when stumps were drawn ten minutes early because of bad light and drizzle Northern Districts were 223-9. Thirty two extras featured in their total.
