Mohali: Punjab dominated day one by scoring 317 for eight in the North Zone Ranji Trophy four day league match against Himachal Pradesh at the PCA stadium on Sunday.
Vikram Rathore elected to bat first and opened the innings with Navjot Singh Sidhu. But Sidhu (1) fell early, playing a poor hook shot off the bowling of Shakti Singh to be caught at square leg by Sangram Singh. Rathore on 37 achieved a milestone, becoming the first player from Punjab and the 26th batsmen to score 5000 runs in the national cricket championship. This was his 101st innings in his 65th match. He reached this landmark in style when he hit a straight six off Jaswant Rai. On 44 however Rathore was caught and bowled by Jaswant Rai as he tried to clear mid on.
Reetinder Sodhi (79) and Pankaj Dharmani (70) showed their patience and skill during a 94-run partnership for the third wicket off 161 balls. Sodhi's innings was studded with 10 hits to fence and a six over mid wicket off Nischal Gaur. Dharmani showed his grace while playing the leg glance and square cut as he hit ten boundries. Sodhi was caught at second slip by Rajiv Nayyar while trying to square drive an away going delivery of Parveen Sharma.
Dinesh Mongia (2) became another victim of Parveen Sharma as he was bowled by a quick delivery which kept very low. The middle order batsmen of Punjab did not contribute much and fell to Shakti Singh's accurate bowling. Tailenders Sarandeep Singh (54) and Navdeep Singh (16) added 59 runs for the unbroken ninth wicket partnership at close of play.

Mohali: In a one sided affair, Punjab routed Himachal Pradesh by 178 runs in the season's opening North Zone Ranji Trophy one day league match at the PCA stadium here on Saturday.
Himachal skipper Rajiv Nayyar won the toss and elected to field first. His new ball bowlers Shakti Singh and Parveen Sharma bowled according to plan. Shakti Singh in particular was very accurate. He accounted for Sandeep Sharma (15) who while defending a slower delivery snicked to the wicketkeeper. Test discard Navjot Singh Sidhu (3) was also caught by the 'keeper off the bowling of Parveen Sharma.
After the fall of these two early wickets, Punjab skipper Vikram Rathore in company with Reetinder Sodhi played a sensible innings. This pair added 134 runs for the third wicket. Rathore in particular played elegant strokes as he hit ten boundaries and a huge six in his knock of 88 runs which came off 100 balls. While trying to clear the long off fence, he was caught by Sangram Singh off Ajay Mannu. Reetinder Sodhi also fell soon after when he was caught behind off Mannu while trying to cut a short delivery.
After Sodhi's departure, Pankaj Dharmani took charge of scoring runs at will. He placed the ball in the gaps with ease and hit three boundaries in his knock of 54 runs (61 balls). In the slog overs, Amit Sharma (27) and Yuvraj Singh (17*) took the total to 273 in the 50 overs. Shakti Singh and Ajay Mannu took two wickets each giving away 41 and 48 runs respectively.

Services fumble against Delhi pacemen

New Delhi: Services were bundled out for 141 in their first innings against Delhi on the opening day of the four day North Zone Ranji Trophy match at the Harbaksh Singh stadium here today. At close Delhi were 61 for one with Ashu Dani (29) and Ashish Malhotra (14) at the crease.
Hostile bowling by the Delhi medium pacers gave a hard time to the Services batsmen. Ashish Nehra was the pick of the bowlers as he accounted for five wickets giving away 25 runs. He was supported by some disciplined bowling from Amit Bhandari and Rahul Sanghvi> Nehra inflicted early damage when he had Sarabjeet Singh (0) caught by Vijay Dahiya in his second over. He struck again, trapping Narender Singh (11) in front of the wickets with the total at 23.
Rahul Sanghvi removed Abu Eric (11) off his very first ball, caught by Nehra in the covers. After three wickets had gone down for 39, seasoned campaigner Pankaj Maitrey (28) and skipper Sanjay Verma (37) put on 61 runs for the fourth wicket to steady their innings. However, Verma's departure to a quick stumping by Dahiya off Sanghvi started a collapse, with none of the batsmen who followed, with the exception of G.S.Thapa (20*), reaching double figures.
The Services innings folded up 15 minutes after tea. Delhi began their innings on a confident note but lost opener Vijay Dahiya (16) through a brilliant diving catch by wicketkeeper Sarabjeet Singh off the bowling of Syed Javed.
