India sight victory after Gill buries England with runs

Akash and Siraj made early inroads after another Gill ton set England a target of 608

England 407 and 72 for 3 (Duckett 25, Akash 2-36) need 536 more runs to beat India 587 and 427 for 6 dec (Gill 161, Jadeja 69, Pant 65, Tongue 2-93)
India need seven fifth-day wickets to beat England at Edgbaston and head to Lord's with the series level. It would be a first Test win as captain for Shubman Gill, who followed his 269 in the first innings with 161 in the second, declared at drinks to set a world-record target of 608, then watched Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep prise out England's top order.
The fourth day was dominated by intrigue about the timing of India's declaration, which arrived far later than many expected and left England facing an ideological problem. After a single draw - and that one prompted by two days of rain - in the last three years, would they finally tone down their approach with the bat and accept that winning was off the table?

King, Cross overpower Essex in rain-reduced win at Old Trafford

Ashes rivals take two wickets each to seal five-overs-a-side contest

Lancashire 55 for 2 (Lamb 21) beat Essex 47 for 7 (Cross 2-9, King 2-17) by eight wickets (DLS)
Ashes rivals Kate Cross and Alana King equally shared four wickets to set Lancashire Thunder up for a convincing rain-affected Vitality Blast win over Essex Eagles at Emirates Old Trafford, keeping their Finals Day hopes alive.
England seamer Cross and Australia legspinner King struck twice apiece in the space of 10 legitimate balls in the sixth and seventh overs of what turned out to be an eight-over Essex innings as they slipped to 38 for six and later totalled 47 for seven.

Phil Salt 80, Jos Buttler 54 fire Lancashire past Northants

Saqib Mahmood hat-trick helps Lightning overtake Steelbacks at top of table

Lancashire 181 for 5 (Salt 80, Buttler 54) beat Northamptonshire 177 (Mahmood 4-49) by five wickets
Phil Salt shrugged off an enforced change of bat to blaze 80 from 57 balls and power Lancashire Lightning to a win that lifted them above Northamptonshire Steelbacks in the Vitality Blast North Group table.
The England white-ball international, playing his first game since winning the IPL with Royal Challengers Bangalore a month ago, had to call for a replacement bat after umpires Simon Widdup and Rob Bailey inspected his original blade early in the Lancashire run-chase.

Maxwell and Netravalkar set up Freedom's demolition of Orcas

Heinrich Klaasen was the only batter to resist as Orcas were bowled out for 82, which took Freedom just 9.2 overs to overhaul

Washington Freedom 86 for 2 (Mukhtar 36*, Ravindra 32, Jasdeep 1-11) beat Seattle Orcas 82 (Klaasen 48, Maxwell 3-12, Netravalkar 3-13, Edwards 3-19) by eight wickets
Shimron Hetmyer had done it three games in a row for Seattle Orcas, but couldn't on this occasion, against Washington Freedom. That Orcas batting line-up, which had stuttered and stumbled to five losses in a row before Hetmyer took charge, went back to being incompetent as Hetmyer had an off-day, putting up a paltry 82. It took Freedom just 9.2 overs to complete the chase and climb back to No. 2 on the MLC 2025 points table.
Freedom won the toss, bowled, and Saurabh Netravalkar struck first ball, sending back Shayan Jahangir. Next over, Glenn Maxwell had Aaron Jones' number. Netravalkar got rid of Sikandar Raza in the third over. First ball of the fourth, Maxwell sent back Steven Taylor. And Maxwell then finished the powerplay with Kyle Mayers' wicket, leaving Orcas at 21 for 5 after six overs.

Seales' late strikes, King's 75 put Australia under pressure

Australia 286 and 12 for 2 (Green 6*, Lyon 2*, Seales 2-5) lead West Indies 253 (King 75, Campbell 40, Lyon 3-75, Hazlewood 2-43, Cummins 2-46) by 45 runs
A dramatic conclusion to the second day in Grenada put Australia under severe pressure as Jayden Seales removed both openers after West Indies had limited their deficit to 33. Australia's bowlers shared the success but Brandon King's maiden Test fifty and lower-order resistance lifted West Indies before Australia's top-order was put under the pump again.
West Indies had extended their first innings to the point that Australia had an awkward 35 minutes before the close. Sam Konstas couldn't make it to the end of the first over. Looking to force through the off side from the back foot, playing away from his body, he dragged the ball into his stumps to leave much for him to ponder ahead of the final Test in Jamaica.
