Opened in 1875, Middlesbrough hosted a major match between Yorkshire and the Australians in 1880, one of five games between the two sides that season. It was the only first-class contest staged there, and in 1893 the local club moved out, and in 1911 the last cricket of any kind took place. The ground was developed for housing soon after. The venue was also used for football, and Middlesbrough FC played there until they moved to Ayrsome Park in 1903.
