Charles Hoare was a batsman whose appearances in first-class cricket owed more to connections that ability. His highest score - 35 - came in his first innings for Surrey in 1871 but in 17 innings thereafter he averaged 6.11. He captained Surrey in one match in 1874 before moving north to make one outing for Middlesex. His figures are even worse when it is taken into account that six of his games were against Cambridge University (he averaged 4.73). Ironically, his best two innings came in his only two county v county games. In club cricket - for the Orleans Club, MCC and I Zingari - he enjoyed more success.
