Charlie Hemphrey, a determined middle-order batsman, had an unusual path into the professional game. He grew to be "fed up" with attempting to secure a county contract, after twice being released by Kent and then failing to impress Derbyshire and Essex in trials, so he took the plunge and moved to Australia.

He played grade cricket in Brisbane while working at the local airport, and was prolific enough with the bat to earn a call up to Queensland's Under-23 side, the effective 2nd XI. And after Stuart Law's dismissal as head coach, he was suddenly catapulted into the first team, and had soon become the first English-born player to score a Sheffield Shield hundred since 1978. He quit his job at the airport, and became a Queensland regular.

After an underwhelming 2016-17, he hit 568 Shield runs at 43.69 the following season. He had soon signed a county contract with Glamorgan for the 2019 season, and enjoyed a solid, if unspectacular first year with them.

Hemphrey, born in Doncaster, is a doughty, slow-scoring player in first-class cricket, and is a part-time offspinner to boot.
