Born in Brisbane, Hamish Gardiner qualified for Scotland through his Scottish mother. After finishing his university degree at The Universiy of Queensland, he moved to Scotland in 2013 and, after scoring prodigiously for Carlton club, made his international debut against Australia. Though he had only been living in Scotland for a few months, he had been there regularly earlier in his life and had played for Scotland U-13s.
While he only made one against Australia, Gardiner established himself as a technically proficient top-order batsman in 2014. He scored 82 against a New Zealand A attack that included five bowlers with international experience, and then hit 89 in Malahide to help Scotland win an ODI against Ireland. That was followed up with 54 against a strong New Zealand XI on Scotland's World Cup acclimatisation tour.
