Irfan Karim

The son of Aasif Karim, the slow left-arm bowler who played three ODI World Cups for Kenya and captained them, Irfan Karim was a top-order left-arm batter for the side in the 2010s and after.

His most notable hour came in the World Cricket League Championship of 2013 when he made 65 and 112 in back-to-back ODIs against Canada in Kenya wins. The following year, in the ODI World Cup Qualifier, he made 108 in a win against Netherlands, but the game after that was the last ODI he played.

Both times, Kenya did not make it through to the main event. In the 2010s they were a far cry from the team that made the 2003 World Cup semi-finals. The T20 World Cup Sub Regional Africa Qualifier in Rwanda in 2022-23 was the rare tournament that they bossed in Karim's time, with wins in all their completed games - albeit against the lightweight likes of Mali, Rwanda and Lesotho.

Karim was the top scorer for Kenya in the 2019 T20 World Cup Qualifier, and he made an unbeaten 74, against Canada again, in the 2015 tournament. That year was his first in the Africa T20 Cup - a South African domestic competition that also featured some African national sides and ran for four seasons - where he went on to finish with 328 runs from 13 matches, including a top score of 65 not out against Northerns in 2016.
