Jack Nel was a right-hand opening batsman and a good fielder who played in all five Tests against Australia in 1949-50 but was out of his depth, managing only 139 runs in nine innings with a best of 38. He was recalled in 1957-58, again against Australia, but made 7 and 4 in his only appearance. For Western Province, Nel was a regular for more than a decade.
