S Raju had not even played 15 matches at the senior level representative cricket when Mumbai Indians bought him in the 2025 IPL auction for his base price of INR 30 lakh, on the same day he made his T20 debut for Andhra in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. MI's scouting team most probably spotted him in the Andhra Premier League in 2024 where the right-arm fast bowler picked eight wickets in seven matches and had the third-best economy rate (among frontline bowlers) of 6.15.

Later in the 2024-25 domestic season, Raju was also among the top-three wicket-takers for Andhra in the Ranji Trophy with 16 wickets in six matches.

Before the 2025 auction, Raju appeared in the IPL trials for MI and Sunrisers Hyderabad and was finally picked up by MI for his swing bowling, ability to bowl in the death, his slower ball and yorker. With such variety in his armoury, Raju got an IPL debut in MI's opening game in IPL 2025, against CSK, especially as their leader of the pace attack Jasprit Bumrah was missing the first few games.
