At the time of his death aged 102, Ted English was the oldest surviving county cricketer and as the end of 2012 he remains the fourth longest-lived first-class cricketer in the world. He played as an amateur batsman for Hampshire from 1898 to 1901. In his first season he made his highest first-class innings - 98 against Surrey at The Oval - when he helped add 164 for the fifth wicket. He continued playing club cricket until he was 65 and remained an active sportsman until he was well into his 90s. When 82 he holed in one on the Alton golf course and was 91 when he played his last game of golf. At 93 he reached the final of the Alton Conservative Club snooker championship. For 36 years he was Registrar at Alton.
