TEAMS
A solid top order batter and a more than useful offspinner, Wessly Madhevere has risen up the Zimbabwe ranks from the Under-17 level to now playing international cricket.
Madhevere was part of three Under-19 World Cup campaigns for Zimbabwe in 2016, 2018 and 2020. He was named vice-captain of the side for the 2020 edition in South Africa. He first showcased his all-round prowess during the 2018 Under-19 World Cup where he finished as Zimbabwe's leading scorer (234 runs in six innings) and their leading wicket-taker with ten scalps to his name. He was also Zimbabwe's joint highest wicket-taker in the 2020 edition.
Madhevere made his first-class and List A debut for Mashonaland Eagles in February 2020 right after the Under-19 World Cup. Within a month, he was on a plane to Bangladesh where he made his T20I and ODI debuts. In just his second 50-over game, he scored a vital half-century and finished the three-match series as Zimbabwe's second-highest run-scorer. In March 2023, Madhevere became just the third Zimbabwe bowler to pick a hat-trick in ODIs, achieving the feat against Netherlands in Harare. He also made his Test debut in a two-match series against Afghanistan in March 2021, but failed to score a run or pick a wicket.
In January 2024, Madhevere - along with Brandon Mavuta - was banned by Zimbabwe Cricket [ZC] for recreational drug use and fined 50% of his salary for three months. He has since made a comeback to international cricket.
