A legspinner, William Laidlaw made his name as a schoolboy cricketer at Melville College, playing for Scotland 32 times, 11 as captain, in a career which was interrupted by the war. In 1938 he took 3 for 79 and 5 for 128 against the Australians, and three weeks later a career-best 7 for 70 against Yorkshire; ten years on, he took 5 for 51 against Bradman's Invincibles. From 1948 to 1952 he represented Durham in the Minor Counties Championship.
