Gujarat and UP miss out on knockouts

A round-up of the Ranji Trophy Group B matches on December 4, 2015

Mumbai 531 (Herwadkar 192, Yadav 104, Axar 3-99) and 227 for 6 (Patil 44, Rujul 4-76) drew with Gujarat 421 (Merai 166, Axar 88, Thakur 6-107)
Scorecard
Gujarat were unable to take a first-innings lead in their Group B match against Mumbai at Wankhede Stadium, and therefore conceded a spot in the knockouts to Madhya Pradesh, who have the same 24 points but go through as a result of a higher net run-rate.
Gujarat began the day with a first-innings lead still a possibility, if a remote one, with 176 needed and three wickets in hand. Bhargav Merai could add only 16 more to his overnight score of 150 as Shardul Thakur claimed a return catch, before he added one more wicket to his tally to end with figures of 6 for 107. Gujarat were eventually bowled out for 421, conceding a lead of 110.
The rest of the day was a formality with an outright win highly implausible for either side. Mumbai scored 227 in 65 overs before the match was drawn, with several batsmen getting starts. Nikhil Patil top-scored with an unbeaten 44. Rujul Bhatt picked up 4 for 76.
Uttar Pradesh 524 (Umang 215, Dwivedi 90, Praveen 84) drew with Baroda 321 (Rayudu 70, Waghmode 56, Chawla 3-41) and 258 for 3 (Waghmode 100*, Hooda 86)
Scorecard
Uttar Pradesh were left with the unenviable task of having to push for an unlikely outright win on the last day of the group stage, in their game against Baroda in Noida, in order to qualify for the quarter-finals.
They had already secured a first-innings lead and began the day 145 ahead with three wickets in hand but lost Praveen Kumar early. Umang Sharma added 20 to his overnight score to finish with a career-best score of 215 before UP were bowled out for 524.
Baroda's opening batsmen - Kedar Devdhar and Aditya Waghmode - quashed any hopes that UP had of qualification by putting on a 97-run stand in 39 overs. Deepak Hooda provided some late entertainment with a 66-ball 86, an innings that featured 10 fours and three sixes. Ultimately, the captains shook hands when Waghmode got to his fourth first-class century.
