goes over mid-off for four, but South Africa still fall short. Sri Lanka win by three runs to start the World Cup with good momentum. The ball was in the slot on off, and Mlaba lofted, but it was too late. The hosts are upset right in their first game of the tournament
SL Women vs SA Women, 1st Match, Group 1 at Cape Town, WT20 WC, Feb 10 2023 - Match Result
So the tournament starts with a thriller, and with an upset. Pretty much one hit separated the two sides, with the match going down to the last ball. Sri Lanka get off the mark on the opening day, as we wrap it up for the night. Thanks for your company though, and don't forget to join us for the double-header tomorrow. Until then, it is goodnight and goodbye from Hemant, Binoy and me, Himanshu!
Duncan Ward: "What an advert for this tournament! Amazing game, swung both ways and back again in that innings. Well done Sri Lanka. Roll on the rest of the tournament!"
Chamari Athapaththu, the winning captain: "There is good culture in the team. Players are very committed. The wicket was really good for batters; had I won the toss, I would have batted first. We have upset big teams on a couple of occasions... I hope my team can do better in this World Cup. Really happy to see the crowd here"
Sune Luus speaks first: "Sri Lanka had a good partnership; we lacked that partnership. I thought 130 was par score. The ball was coming on to the bat nicely. The World Cup still has a long way to go. Lot of positives going into the next couple of games"
Time for the presentations
Alex: "Blimey. That was fun. Great game to start the tournament"
Chamari Athapaththu is the Player of the Match: "Really happy... I tried to lead from the front. It was a team performance. South Africa are one of the best in the world, and playing at home. Vishmi is a superstar, our Under-19 captain. I just play my natural game."
Vihanga Ismail: "Cough, cough, cough... South Africa"
10.16pm A tight win where the chase never really got going. Each of South Africa's top four faced at least 12 deliveries, but the highest score remained Luus' 28, which took 27 balls coming. What was 44 for 1 in the eighth over - notice the slow run rate already - became 72 for 5 in the 13th. Ranaweera, Ranasinghe and Kumari shared seven wickets, after Sri Lanka were boosted by Athapaththu's 68 and Gunaratne's 35 with the bat. Wickets fell in clusters for the hosts, and even if some extras contributed to their score, they just fell short eventually.
dot ball... ah. Gets an inside edge as she tries to hoick this very full ball outside off
slashes this good length ball wide of off to point
9 off 3
yorker length on off, and dragged to long-on
Mlaba
another run-out at the keeper's end! This is ending in a hurry now. Again Ismail tried to step out of the crease, clipping the good length ball around middle and leg towards midwicket. Kumari gave the chase herself to her left, and threw bang close to the stumps for another wicket to tumble
skips down, as it is a full toss around off. Bashed down the pitch, with long-on rushing to her right to cut that off
13 off 6. Kumari to Ismail, with Sri Lanka also facing the over-rate penalty; only three fielders on the rope
now an appeal for a possible stumping. Everything is happening here, absolutely all possible drama. Full, slow and loopy on a wide-ish line outside off. She went half-lofting, and missed, as the keeper clipped the bails off. But her back foot is just on the line. It is given not out after multiple replays from multiple angles
Khaka the new batter
run-out at the keeper's end! This time short third made up for the fault in the previous ball. Fullish ball outside off, as Ismail tried to swipe but the ball popped up off her pad to short third. The one-handed pick up and throw went high to the keeper, who whipped the bails off to find Jafta short
ah, misfield by short third! This is unacceptable at this stage. The fielder moved a bit too much to her left, and the ball slid through to her right. Full outside off, and Ismail got an outside edge while pushing at it
Ismail
gone, stumped! Ranaweera slowed it down, and foxed Luus there. She backed away, and skipped down the pitch, as the bowler tossed the ball up while bowling very slowly. It pitched on a full length around off, and turned away, with Luus way down the pitch. Easy stumping for the keeper
Raji: "What is happening out there? Phew.. "
short on off, and swatted towards midwicket
good length and outside leg. Wide called
backs away, and hoicks this fullish ball angling in wide of long-on. What follows is absolute ruckus: the batters end up in the middle of the pitch after some confusion, and then head towards the bowler's end, only for South Africa to miss the run-out chance
20 from 12.
she is having fun with those flashes! Another one cut hard to bisect point and short third, as Dilhari bowled short and wide of off again
tries the slash again, but this short ball is slower, and so she is beaten
another late guide to short third, as this ball is fullish outside off. And, and... there is an overthrow at the keeper's end to allow an extra run
between short third and point! This match looks like going deep. Short outside off, and hacked away after riding the bounce. Crucial runs here
a very late guide at this good length ball on off, and they grab two with rapid running
Abhinav K A: "Better call Dane?"
short outside off, and clipped towards deep midwicket
skips down, and slices this full ball outside off just over mid-off
