That's that! The home crowd is silenced as defending champions Jamaica Tallawahs start their CPL 2023 campaign with a 11-run win over St Lucia Kings. Was a back of a length ball on middle, he backs away and hacks it to deep backward square leg. All smiles in the Tallawahs camp.
Tallawahs vs Kings, 1st Match at Gros Islet, CPL 2023, Aug 16 2023 - Ball by Ball Commentary
Good start for Tallawahs, who will want to build on this. For Kings, they will be keen on getting back to winning ways soon. A quick turn around for them as they take on Barbados Royals at the same venue tomorrow. We will back for the game, but till then, on behalf of Binoy George, this is me Ashish Pant, signing off. Ciao!
Brandon King, the winning captain: [First game as skipper] New challenge for me, the guys helped me as well. A lot of experienced guys, makes my life easier. I have an important role to play at the top. I had to build the partnership and that's all I tried to do. The guys are very experienced, and they helped me make the decisions. The spinners bowled very well . [When Chase and Primus were going big] I wasn't worried, it didn't come down too close. Salman has incredible skills. He was very clear in his mind on what he wanted to bowl.
Faf du Plessis: It felt 10-15 runs too many. King played a great innings. He was just one guy who got stuck in. Their spinners also bowled very well. Their team is set up with those spinners. Imad and Green have been great for them. We thought there might be some bounce. But there was not a lot of bounce. The spinners bowled pretty well. We know at this venue, one of the top boys need to bat deep. If we get going it is difficult to stop. Great to see Chase play really well. We need his runs for us to be successful. [On the dropped catch] I should be catching those even is there is a tornado blowing. The wind is playing a factor. Never easy under the night sky.
Player of the match is Brandon King: I am pretty happy to get the first win. I am just glad that I contributed in the first game of the CPL. It is good to have some consistency. Feeling good at the crease. You tend to make the right kind decisions.
Presentation time
11.02pm Tallawahs get their CPL 2023 off to a winning start with a comfortable win over Kings. It was comfortable for the most part and even cameos from Chase and Primus proved insufficient. A 188-chase was always going to be tough and Kings lost captain Faf du Plessis early. Charles got a couple of lives, but did become the highest run-getter in CPL history going past Lendl Simmons. But he failed to carry on and fell for 24. Sean Williams scored 26 and only Chase, with a 31-ball 53 game them some impetus. Sikandar Raza and Kimani Melius fell off successive balls, and at that stage it seemed to be a simple win for Tallawahs. But Primus whacked 37 off 20 balls, but the run rate went out of hand quite quickly. Imad Wasim with 3 for 27 was the pick of the bowlers for the visitors.
Last ball, Kings need 13
Another inch-perfect yorker on leg stump, Joseph gets a thick inside-edge to Reifer at deep fine leg, who makes a meal of it and concedes four runs when there should have been one. Took it too easy
Knee-high full toss on his pads, he swishes it to deep backward square leg
Hatzoglou in
Cleans up Forde with another searing yorker! Right in the blockhole on off stump. Forde looks for an ungainly slog, misses and Irshad hits Bullseye. The off pole takes a beating and Tallawahs are now on the brink.
Yorker on middle stump, he works it to deep midwicket
Joseph
Oh, Chase misses out on a full toss and has his stumps disturbed! Not the most ideal deliveries, but does the job and Tallawahs will heave a high of relief. On leg stump, he backs away and the ball does dip on him a touch. Loses his shape completely as the ball hits leg stump
A very long over comes to an end. Irshad to bowl the final. Kings need 19
Oh, some innovation from Forde and he gets four for he effort. Length ball well outside off, he shuffles well across and scoops it over short fine leg.
Forde
Gets the run out now does Amir, and he gets rid of the dangerous Primus. Full on off, he gets a thick inside-edge back onto the pads with the ball ballooning straight up. He loses track of the ball and sets off for a run. Amir under-arms it back onto the stumps at the striker's end and Primus is well short.
Another wide. He's trying to get away from that arc of Primus. Fuller well outside off, past the tramline again
Attempted yorker goes awry again. Well outside off, called a wide.
Oh, he can't get it away and Amir misses a run out. Yorker on the stumps, he jams it to the bowler, who misfields a touch. Primus searches for a run and is sent back. Amir has a shy at the stumps, but misses.
Change of pace taking it away from Primus' hitting arc. Was very close to the tramline, but the umpire goes Amir's this time
Low full toss outside off, but that was well past the tramline
Oh, dear me, that has been walloped deep! He's flexed his muscles and with some disdain. Banged in short, but Primus is camped on the backfoot and he hammers the pull deep over deep midwicket
Back of a length ball angled outside off, he backs away and hacks it straight to mid-off.
Kings need 32 off 12 balls. Amir to bowl the 19th over.
Another low full toss outside leg, he backs away and hacks it to deep midwicket
Four more! Primus is turning it on, and how. Irshad loses his radar, gets this on the full and down leg. Primus heaves it past short fine leg
PUMPED! Low full toss on off, he backs away and pummels it all along the ground to the left of deep cover. No one moved
Another solid yorker on off and middle. Chase backs away and can only dig it out to long on
Inch-perfect yorker bang on off stumps. Can only jam it to extra cover
