A record-breaking day for Charlotte Edwards ended in frustration as rain washed out the second one-day international against Sri Lanka in Colombo.
Edwards, the England captain, became the most capped player in women's international cricket marking, her 142nd match with a career-best bowling performance of 4 for 30 as the hosts scrapped to 173 for 8 but bad weather intervened in England's chase to force an end to the game and give England the series 1-0.
Rain had already reduced the match to 38 overs per side but England only got through 9.1 overs of their chase before the weather had the final say.
Edwards' bowling effort followed the good work of Danielle Hazell who broke the opening partnership by bowling Inoka Galagedara with her offspin for 17. She added the other opener, Chamari Atapattu, soon after for a well-compiled 37. Laura Marsh chipped in with two wickets of her own before Edwards worked through the middle and lower order.
There was good resistance from Eshani Kaushalya (28) and wicketkeeper Dilani Manodara, who made an unbeaten 21 from 24 balls to lift the score to 173. England's chase got off to a quiet start and they lost Edwards, trapped in front to Sripali Weerakkody, for seven. Thereafter Heather Knight and Claire Taylor steadied the ship until the rain came.
