down the track and he spots the slower short ball quickly, gets into a lovely stable position, and pulls it witheringly to the left of deep square leg to seal a comfortable win, on debut, for Gujarat Lions
Kings XI vs Guj Lions, 3rd match at Mohali, Apr 11 2016 - Ball by Ball Commentary
Guj Lions won by 5 wickets (with 14 balls remaining)
11.45pm And that is that from us. Surprising decision by the adjudicators, for me. Most four-fors in T20 involve a huge element of luck - batsmen hitting long-hops straight to deep midwicket and so forth - but Bravo got his wickets with some really, really top-notch T20 bowling, and deserved the match award. Those two yorkers to Maxwell and Miller potentially shaved 20 runs from the Kings XI total. In any case, I don't make these decisions. Hope you enjoyed the game, and do keep tuning in for all our other coverage. We'll have a match report and other pieces up very soon. Until next time, good night!
Aaron Finch is the Player of the Match: "Nice to start off the tournament well, but I think all credit goes to our bowlers. It was a beautiful wicket, there was some grass on it and it skidded on really well. I shanked a couple, got lucky, but in T20 you need a bit of luck early on. I just didn't perform well enough to last a long time in my previous franchises [when asked how it feels to be playing for his sixth IPL team]."
11.35pm Suresh Raina: "We pulled it [back] really well. Bravo, PK, Faulkner, Jadeja bowled really well. At one stage we thought they would get to 200. We have a couple of international captains in our side, and Hodgy has a lot of experience too, and that really made a difference."
Don: "Watching the few games that have been played so far, the two new teams, Pune and Gujarat, seems to have better and more balanced teams than most of the other established teams. Especially Pune, I wouldn't be surprised if they make the semis or even go all way to the title."
11.27pm Kings XI Punjab rely heavily on their top-heavy batting line-up to put up massive totals. They seemed to be headed for one when M Vijay and Manan Vohra were batting, but that familiar pair of Dwayne Bravo and Ravindra Jadeja - playing for a new team - stymied them with crucial wickets in the middle overs, and they only made 161 after threatening to get to 200 at one point. David Miller reckons they were "15-20 runs short". Kings XI's bowling - their weak link for a long time - barely threatened Gujarat Lions, with Aaron Finch and Dinesh Karthik ensuring the smoothest of chases.
slower bouncer outside off, Bravo plays a controlled pull out to deep square leg
slower ball wide of off, and Karthik spots it early, clears his front leg, and flat-bats it hard to long-on
slower short ball outside off, and Bravo plays a half-pull, half-whip out to deep square leg
back of a length on off stump, and what a shot that is from Karthik! Punches it firmly, full face showing, and his feet go off the ground at the point of impact. The ball races away between non-striker and mid-off
Here's Bravo.
Shivam: "We used to call it a 'backward straight drive'!"
down the track, stepping away from leg stump to make some room. Johnson fires it full and wide, making Kishan reach for the ball. He goes after it, slices it high in the air, and Mohit Sharma takes a simple catch at backward point, but only after juggling it a couple of times. That ended up stuck in the crook of his elbow.
fullish on off stump, not full enough to deny him swinging room or elevation, and he simply swipes this away, cleanly over midwicket
slower bouncer, and Kishan misses the pull
shortish outside off, dabbed to the left of backward point. Takes off for the single, not realising that Axar throws left-handed. Axar's throw at the keeper's end misses, with Karthik stranded halfway down the pitch, and they complete the single with a sigh of relief
down the track comes Karthik, and makes a bit of room to flat-bat the fullish ball powerfully in the air, wide of mid-off
Sanjay: "I remember those days as a kid when my mom made me wear shoes that blinked when i walked. Hope to see lights flashing from cricketers' shoes." -- Your mum made you wear those shoes? My mum refused to buy them for me!
googly, but it starts outside leg stump, and Kishan plays this very well, a straight-bat paddle sweep - Sachin Tendulkar used to play this shot in this manner - into the gap to the left of short fine leg
down the track again, fired in flat outside leg stump, whipped in the air, on the bounce towards deep square leg
sees him coming down the track and fires it quicker. Kishan looks for the big hit with the turn and inside-edges into his pads
slow flight outside off, swept in the air, but bounces well short of the deep square leg fielder
back of a length outside off, stabbed to backward point
ooh, nearly another run out. Kishan stretches out to this tossed-up ball on middle stump, and it dips and turns in as he looks to flick, rolls off his pad into the leg side. DK quickly calls Kishan through for the single, and Kishan has to dive at the non-striker's end. Direct hit would have made things interesting
back of a length close to off stump, lets it come on and dabs towards backward point
bouncer angling in from wide of the crease, and Karthik sways his head away from the line and gets down low to evade the ball, keeping his eye on it all the way through
back around the wicket to DK
fullish, on middle stump, clipped to deep midwicket
Here's Ishan Kishan. Johnson comes back over the wicket to the left-hander.
a run-out! Back of a length, angling into off stump, and DK tucks it into the leg side and takes off for the single. He barely gets any wood on the shot, and it's only dribbling by the side of the pitch, and Johnson sprints through in his follow-through and kicks the ball onto the stumps at the keeper's end, finding Jadeja well short of his crease
Around the wicket now.
G.Sarkar: "One day will come when there will be... LED bats and pads just like LED stumps. Reflectors on ball and a giant disco ball on top of spider cam."
length ball on off stump. Jadeja is stuck to the crease, moving neither forward nor back, and simply shows the ball the full face to push towards mid-on
fired in full at the pads, and it hits the pads and dribbles down towards fine leg after Jadeja misses the flick
Johnson.
