Wagg, bowlers lead Glamorgan through

The experienced pair of Murray Goodwin and Jacques Rudolph guided Glamorgan to their first NatWest T20 Blast quarter-final in six years with a comprehensive eight-wicket win against Gloucestershire at Cardiff.

The victory secured fourth place in the South Group, meaning Glamorgan will face Lancashire in the last eight. Glamorgan knew a win would guarantee them a quarter-final tie - albeit away from home - and they blew Gloucestershire away with eight overs to spare.

The hosts put Gloucestershire in after winning the toss and it proved a good decision as they restricted their opponents to a very tame 108 for 9 from their 20 overs. Benny Howell top-scored with 26 in an innings which only produced four boundaries - two sixes and two fours.

Graham Wagg, back from a side strain, set the tone claiming two wickets in his first over while skipper Jim Allenby and Michael Hogan both chipped in with two wickets each.

It took only eight balls to make a key breakthrough when Wagg bowled Gloucestershire skipper Michael Klinger with an inswinging delivery and four balls later he had Chris Dent caught behind attempting a flashing drive.

Gloucestershire could only make 29 for two from the Powerplay and they suffered another setback when Alex Gidman was run out with a direct hit from Chris Cooke at square leg going for a sharp single.

From 36 for 3 in the eighth over Glamorgan's dominance continued in the next over as Gloucestershire lost Hamish Marshall, caught by Hogan off Allenby.

Ian Cockbain and Benny Howell had a massive rebuilding job to do. At the halfway stage they were 48 for 4. But the wickets kept coming as Cockbain went caught behind off Allenby just after the 50 came up and from the last ball of the 15th over Gloucestershire succumbed to their second run out when Adam Rouse was undone by a brilliant direct hit from Rudolph.

Jack Taylor did give Gloucestershire some respite, hitting Cosker for six over long-off. But the visitors lost another two wickets from consecutive Hogan balls. Taylor was caught by Cooke and Howell was snaffled by Cosker as the visitors sank to 97 for 8 seven balls from the end.

In the final over Tom Smith became the third run out, the victim of another direct hit by the impressive Cooke - but not before Robbie Montgomery struck his side's second six.

Allenby made a very positive start to Glamorgan's reply striking four fours as Montgomery's first over conceded 19 runs. But Glamorgan suffered a double setback when they lost Allenby, caught at extra cover by Klinger, and Wallace who was bowled two balls later. It left the county 29 for 2 in the third over.

Rudolph and Murray Goodwin settled the ship to take Glamorgan to 46 for 2 at the end of the Powerplay - and Glamorgan were well on their way to victory at the halfway stage as they reached 82 for 2. There were no more scares and Goodwin wrapped up the win with two sixes.
