Gloucestershire took revenge against Essex for the 109 run defeat
they were handed out at Bristol earlier this summer. Skipper Mark Alleyne
took the last three wickets as Gloucestershire bowled out Essex
for 243. Having been set a victory target of 348, Essex started the
day at 141 for 4 but lost Stephen Peters, Graham Napier and Barry Hyam
very quickly while the Essex skipper Ronnie Irani was holding the
other end. He batted for 3 hours to make a defiant 33 not out. The
other notable performance was by Danny Law who made 29 and along with
his skipper put on a stand of 39 for the eighth wicket. He was the
first of Alleyne's victims who then went on to claim Tim Mason and
Ashley Cowan. Alleyne ended with 3 for 44 while seamer Ben Gannon
picked up 3 for 66.
The win enabled Gloucestershire take 18 points while Essex took 3
points.
