Division One

Hampshire fell four runs short against Sussex at Arundel, with a late surge from Dimitri Mascarenhas and Dominic Cork ending in vain as next weekend's Friends Provident finalists warmed-up in style. Sussex set the visitors 225 to win, and looked like they were in the driving seat as Hampshire slumped to 2 for 2 after two overs. But Michael Carberry (55) and Mascarenhas (76) stages a recovery. Mascarenhas hit his runs off 72 balls, but was caught on the long off boundary in the penultimate over which left 16 needed from the last. It went down to the wire, as Tremlett edged a boundary and Yasir Arafat no-balled, leaving Cork on strike needing five from the last two deliveries, but he couldn't quite manage it.
Boundaries flowed at Cheltenham as Gloucestershire produced a fine run chase to reach 192 in 18 overs with three balls to spare against Essex as the crowd who hung around were given their monies worth. William Porterfield was the home side's star with 97 off 53 balls and he added 135 with James Franklin who launched 60 from 30 deliveries to light up gloomy conditions. Essex's innings was powered by Ryan ten Doeschate 88 from 43 with six sixes during a partnership of 117 with Grant Flower. However, those pyrotechnics were outshone in the end.
Rana Naved starred with an all-round display as the Yorkshire bowlers fought back after Durham made a rapid start to their run chase and secured a comfortable 47-run victory at Scarborough. Naved slammed 45 off 15 balls at the end of Yorkshire's innings, but Phil Mustard (55) and Ian Blackwell (37 off 22) balls added 85 in 10 overs for Durham's first wicket. However, when David Wainwright made the breakthrough the Durham batting fell away. Rain interrupted the chase at 118 for 4 and they required 50 more off 7.3 overs when play resumed. Adil Rashid produced an impressive spell to claim 2 for 12 in six overs then Naved cleaned up the lower order. Yorkshire's 199 for 7 was anchored by Andrew Gale's 83 from 108, but the late impetus came from Rana was crucial.
David Hussey's brutal 120 off 60 balls proved fruitless for Nottinghamshire as rain arrived to end their match against Somerset at Trent Bridge one over short of it begin a game. Hussey, though, provided some wonderful entertainment for the crowd as he reached his hundred from 50 balls, with the second fifty requiring 15 deliveries. He added a club-record third-wicket stand of 204 with Matt Wood and there were some harsh bowling figures on view. Despite a brisk start from Marcus Trescothick, Somerset were well behind the rate at 71 for 3 when rain allowed them to escape with a point.
