A century from Adam Voges has put Western Australia back on track after a shaky start to their Pura Cup match against New South Wales at the SCG. Matthew Nicholson had the Warriors reeling at 3 for 27 before Voges and Chris Rogers added 109 for the fourth wicket to guide their team back into the match, reaching 7 for 296 at stumps.
Voges scored his second hundred this season and put together invaluable stands with Rogers and Luke Ronchi. Ronchi made an entertaining 70 from 88 deliveries as he and Voges put on 111 for the fifth wicket. Voges took a back seat in the partnership, allowing Ronchi to hit 10 fours and one six. Despite holding the record for the fastest domestic one-day century in Australia, Voges took 233 deliveries to accumulate his unbeaten 115.
Rogers, who was already the highest run-scorer in the Pura Cup this season, made his third half-century in four games, on top of the 279 he made in Western Australia's season-opening clash with Victoria. He now has 565 runs at an average of 94, following on from a strong season in England's county cricket, where he made a double-century and a triple-century for Northamptonshire. After 163 deliveries Rogers was finally caught for 84 when he pulled a ball from outside off stump to Nathan Hauritz at midwicket from the bowling of Stuart MacGill.
Nicholson, who finished with 3 for 40, had the Blues on the back foot early when he claimed 3 for 0 within nine balls. He bowled the opener Clint Heron for 2, Marcus North for 0 and had Shaun Marsh caught behind down the leg side for 4. The Blues went into the match with three specialist spinners: MacGill, Hauritz and Beau Casson. However, MacGill was the only one to do any serious damage, taking 3 for 89. He picked up Brad Hogg for 0 and Aaron Heal for 1 late in the day.
