Jason Gillespie proved as dangerous as ever with a five-wicket haul that made a mess of the Queensland top order before the Bulls limped to 192 with a late recovery. South Australia's main strike bowler Shaun Tait, who is out with a hamstring injury, was barely missed as Gillespie had Queensland in danger of failing to reach triple figures at 7 for 77.
He finished with 5 for 41 after the lower order, led by Chris Hartley with 39 and Mitchell Johnson with 39 not out, gave the Queensland bowlers something to defend. At stumps, the Redbacks (1 for 8) had lost some of their advantage, with Matthew Elliott falling to Andy Bichel for a third-ball 0.
Gillespie made Jimmy Maher's decision to bat look questionable when he bowled Lachlan Stevens for 0 in the third over. Maher's own poor four-day form continued after Paul Rofe had him caught behind by Shane Deitz for 9.
When Gillespie trapped Shane Watson for 5 in his first match back from a hamstring problem, the Bulls were reeling at 3 for 17. Hartley and Bichel (32) built a valuable eighth-wicket partnership of 57 before Johnson and the No. 11 Daniel Doran (17) also added 57 between them. The Bulls could easily have been all out for 145 when Matthew Elliott dropped a simple chance from Johnson.
