Stumps: J&K trail by 130

Abid Mushtaq and Kanhaiya Wadhawan ensure there's no further damage for J&K. At stumps after two days of action in Kalyani, J&K are 198 for 5, trailing by 130 runs. Shami and Mukesh had struck back-to-back, but Mushtaq and Wadhawan have added 42 since to stabilise their side.

Mushtaq fights for J&K

In the 48th over, Abid Mushtaq leans into a lovely loft against Mohammed Shami. There's the pace he would like, and he uses the angle from around the wicket to send the ball sailing for six over mid-off. J&K 188 for 5 in 48 overs, trailing by 140 runs. Mushtaq 24* off 28 balls, with two fours and a six.

Smaran 100; Karnataka 650

R Smaran gently pushes a full ball from Sudha to mid-on, and brings up his fifth first-class hundred. That single also raises Karnataka's 650. How much more? Uttarakhand can't wait for their frustration to end. Karnataka 651 for 6 in 164 overs.

Shami breaks 143 stand!

Back for his second spell, Mohammed Shami strikes in his first over. Fourth ball of the 40th over, he goes full and outside off. Abdul Samad, on 82, is lured into an aerial drive, and the ball flies to Akash Deep, placed at deep cover point. Maybe that was more well timed than what was needed. Bengal can finally breathe as the 143 partnership is broken. J&K 156 for 4 in 39.4 overs, trailing by 172 runs.

Tea in Lucknow: Karnataka 631 for 6

R Smaran is on 91* when it's tea. Karnataka have built a mountain of a total already, with 631 runs on the board. Uttarakhand can only wait and hope that their trouble ends soon. Karnataka, meanwhile, may have batted their hosts out of the game already.

Jaiswal gets Dogra but...

... it's a no-ball. On what was the last ball of the 29th over, Paras Dogra, on 41, was beaten by the seam movement back in from Suraj Sindhu Jaiswal, and given out lbw. But Jaiswal and Bengal's celebration hardly lasted, as replays showed Jaiswal's front foot had crossed the line. Next ball, Dogra was quick enough to survive despite a direct hit from mid-off at the non-striker's end.
More drama comes next over, when Dogra pushes to cover and takes off. But Samad sends him back, and the throw to the keeper is wide. Dogra is still there after some luck goes his way a few times. J&K 119 for 3 in 30 overs, trailing by 209 runs.

Uttarakhand end 123 stand

It's a part-timer who gets a wicket again. Offspinner Avneesh Sudha darts one in from around the wicket on a length on off, and Kruthik Krishna is beaten as the ball skids through to hit off stump. Kruthik is gone for 60, but there's still no declaration as his 123 stand with R Smaran ends. Karnataka 608 for 6 in 149.3 overs.

Tea: Samad, Dogra add 100*

Bengal have been looking clueless ever since Abdul Samad started hitting back with a flurry of boundaries. He arrived at 13 for 3, and has, since then, smashed nine boundaries in his knock of 58* in 52 balls. His captain Paras Dogra has been much calmer, ticking to 40 in 73 deliveries. Their stand is now worth 100 at a run rate of 4.8. J&K 113 for 3 in 28 overs, trailing by 215 runs.

Karnataka keep piling

The first ball of the 142nd over is a length delivery outside off from Janmejay Joshi, who's bowling from around the wicket to R Smaran. The batter goes back to punch for four wide of mid-off. Next ball, Joshi goes full and wide of off. Smaran lets it go, and it's called wide. The wheels are coming off for Uttarakhand. Karnataka 578 for 5 in 142 overs. Smaran on 61, and Kruthik on 47.

Smaran, Kruthik add 50

Kruthik Krishna goes back to clip Mayank Mishra for a single behind square to raise the fifty stand with R Smaran (43*). Kruthik (30*) has been the aggressor among the two, taking a special liking for the deep-third region, where he has bagged plenty of boundaries. Karnataka 537 for 5 in 130 overs. How much more pain for Uttarakhand?

Dogra at Mt 10k

10000 Runs for J&K captain Paras Dogra in the Ranji Trophy when he reached 11 against Bengal.
Only Wasim Jaffer (12,038 runs) is ahead of Dogra when it comes to the Ranji Trophy, our statsman Sampath Bandarupalli says.

Gandhi drops Samad

On the first ball of the 14th over, wicketkeeper Habib Gandhi leaps and gets a hand, but ultimately drops Abdul Samad on 34. That added to Bengal's frustration as the J&K batter had been counterattacking after the third wicket. J&K 60 for 3 in 14 overs, trailing by 268 runs. Samad on 36 off 23 deliveries, and his partnership with Paras Dogra is at 47 off just 41 balls.

Samad attacks Shami

There are two crisp drives for four each - one through cover, and the other through point. Then comes a whip through midwicket. Abdul Samad is attacking Mohammed Shami, and countering Mukesh Kumar's strike, as the latter had Shubham Pundir caught at slips. J&K 31 for 3 in nine overs, trailing by 297 runs.

Lunch: Karnataka 502 for 5

Uttarakhand get three wickets in the morning session, but not without conceding 147 runs in 32 overs - a run rate of 4.59 an over. Devdutt Padikkal leads Karnataka's charge with 232, his maiden first-class hundred. He lost Karun Nair on 60, when Abhay Negi had him jabbing behind.

It's the part-time offspinner Lakshya Raichandani who does the trick off a harmless delivery. He has Devdutt Padikkal caught down the leg side with one that turns down on a career-best 232 in 330 balls in the 118th over. Next over, Aditya Rawat cleans up new batter Shreyas Gopal for a duck.
Karnataka 485 for 5 in 119 overs, and miles ahead of Uttarakhand.

Lunch: Shami has two

Mohammed Shami, accompanied by Akash Deep, is already on his way to the dressing room even before Ball Tracking has confirmed that Shubham Pundir is indeed gone. This time Shami bowls on a short of a length around off, and seams it back in to trap Pundir in front. J&K 13 for 2 in seven overs, trailing by 315 runs.

Shami gets Khajuria

Mohammed Shami strikes in his second over. He bowls one on a short of a length on off to Shubham Khajuria, and the ball seams in while also keeping low. Khajuria looks to fend at it but is beaten by the lack of bounce, and is trapped in front. He reviews on being given out, and DRS confirms the ball would have hit the top of leg. J&K 4 for 1 in 2.1 overs, trailing by 324 runs.

Padikkal's maiden 200!

Devdutt Padikkal bats on and on. Facing Abhay Negi from around the wicket on the second ball of the 107th over, he goes back and dabs to point for a single. That takes him to his maiden first-class 200. He was named Karnataka captain midway into this season, and he slams another big knock after 120* against Punjab. Whisper it, but the No. 3 slot for the India side is up for grabs - and Padikkal has been one of the contenders already. Karnataka 432 for 3 in 107 overs.

Bengal 328 all out

Sumanta Gupta scores 39 in 36 balls, including six fours, from No. 8 to propel Bengal to 328. They were 269 for 5 at one stage, and the possibility of a much higher total loomed. But amid a lower-order collapse and with help from No. 11 Mukesh Kumar - the latter got 11, with two boundaries - Sumanta scores handy runs. Sumanta falls to Yudhvir Singh after looking to upper cut but getting caught at deep third. For J&K, it's their usual hero Auqib Nabi who stars with 5 for 87.

Nabi has five, including his guru

The experienced Mohammed Shami advised the rising Auqib Nabi on bowling, fitness and more. As it turns out, Nabi dismisses Shami in Kalyani to complete yet another five-for. Nabi bowls a short-of-a-length ball on off which Shami looks to heave, but is caught at square leg. Bengal 306 for 9 in 93.3 overs.

Nabi, Sunil bring J&K back

Bengal were 269 for 5 in 85 overs, with Gharami at the crease on 146. But they lose 3 for 29 in the next seven overs. Auqib Nabi got Gharami lbw, Sunil Kumar trapped Habib Gandhi in front as well, and Nabi then had Akash Deep lbw too. That gave Nabi his fourth wicket, even as Sumanta Gupta, at the other end, kept Bengal going with a few boundaries. Sumanta, on 22 off 21 balls, has Mohammed Shami for company.
Bengal 298 for 8 in 92 overs. How far can Sumanta take them?

Gharami gone for 146

The Bengal batter falls to a misjudgement. J&K took the new ball, which is harder, and swings and bounces more than the old one. But Gharami decides to let go of a short-of-a-length ball on fifth stump from Auqib Nabi. It seams back in, though, and strikes him on his pad after he takes a stride out. Gharami reviews the out decision, and DRS confirms the ball would have hit the middle-and-off bail. Gharami walks back shaking his head and looking down, but he can be proud of yet another big knock. Bengal 269 for 6 in 85.4 overs.

Umpires want it quick

After 82 overs are done, Gharami, who's on 141, receives some treatment from the physio presumably after the new ball hit him on his knee off an inside edge. But the umpires feel it's taking taking longer than usual, and ask the Bengal physio to quicken up, indicating that he must now go. Bengal 260 for 5 in 82 overs.

Day 2 is here!

Action in Kalyani resumes at 9am local time. It's bright and sunny, and the pitch still looks good enough to bat on. Bengal's centurion Sudip Kumar Gharami now having new batter Habib Gandhi for company. J&K's Sunil Kumar completes the over in which he got Shahbaz Ahmed last evening. Gandhi blocks safely. Bengal 249 for 5 in 80 overs.
