Rain allowed only 8.1 overs at the Gabba but it was enough time for South Australia to reduce Queensland to 2 for 20. Following a three-hour rain delay, Gary Putland removed Ryan Broad (0) and Lee Carseldine (5), who was unhappy to be judged caught at point, after the visitors won the toss.
Wade Townsend, the opener, was 13 while the debutant Chris Lynn had not faced a ball when the rain came again and stumps were eventually called. It was not the start the second-placed Bulls wanted but the conditions should offer the bowlers help throughout the game. Wet weather has hit Brisbane for most of the week and more showers forced the covers on for most of the day.
The Redbacks suffered a setback before play when Graham Manou was ruled out with pain in the knee that was recently operated on. Tim Ludeman came in for South Australia, who must win their final two games outright to stay in contention for the final.
