and India pull it off! Parnell makes room and the ball flies to third man off the toe of the bat, Sreesanth fires the throw wide of Dhoni who stretches and breaks the stumps, Parnell goes for the second but cannot make it in time, Dhoni and the rest know they've prevailed and they wait for confirmation from the third umpire
India vs South Africa, 1st ODI at Jaipur, Feb 21 2010 - Ball by Ball Commentary
Chaps I've got to catch my breath here! So near and yet so far for South Africa! You have to applaud Parnell and Steyn for not giving up. Really, India relaxed after the third Powerplay and weren't prepared for this shock. SA feasted on the part-timers and the regular bowlers, except Praveen, couldn't soak up the pressure.
But South Africa will look back and wish at least one of them offered solid support to their captain. Time to bring back Amla. Kallis had too much on his plate.
Go back to the penultimate ball of the match, when Sachin tries to stop that boundary. Replays and camera angles weren't conclusive. We may never know if that really was a boundary but India got the benefit of the doubt. Terrific effort from Sachin all the same to keep his nerve under pressure.
Stay with us for the presentation.
Kallis: "The guys down the order played unbelievably well. It came on a lot better at night but we lost wickets at the wrong time. It looked like India would get over 300 but our guys did well to keep them under that."
Dhoni: "It was a team effort, overall quite happy with the batting but we need to be fractionally better with the bowler. Jadeja made the difference for us. We were left with just one part-timer, Raina, after Sehwag went off the field."
Jadeja is the Man of the Match "I wanted to bowl stump to stump and not give easy runs to them. I was concentrating on the upcoming games (after being suspended from the IPL)."
Thank you all for joining us for this cracker of a game. Wasn't expected to finish this way though. I'll retire for the night. On behalf of Siddharth Ravindran, this is Kanishkaa signing off. Cheers guys!
It's called a wide! Wide outside off from round the wicket, Parnell cannot reach outm Dhoni applauds his bowler and his expression changes, the security come rushing out thinking the game's over
So a boundary needed! Parnell will have to do the honours, Good Lord what a finish! Amla comes out with a glove for Parnell, Praveen waits patiently, you can hardly see anyone in the circle
drops the slower ball short down the leg side and he swivels and pulls wide of short fine leg, Sachin does his best to dive at long leg to save it, the third umpire takes a look after Sachin pulls it back, close call, very close call, after a hundred replays it's not declared a boundary
another slower ball, from round the wicket, Parnell makes room and only manages an inside edge to short fine leg
Praveen tries to remain calm, deep point in place, Parnell gathers himself
he gets an inside edge to the on side, cramped for room and Parnell has the strike
9 to get off 4 balls, what can Langeveldt do?
timber! The leg stump is flattened! Praveen bowls the leg cutter, Steyn waltzes down the pitch and tries to mow it over the on side, swings too early because of the change of pace, looked back to see the deforestation behind him
Parnell cleverly drops it down to point for a single to give Steyn the strike
10 off 6 balls. Praveen to bowl, many in the deep
Nehra gets away for a high full toss outside off, the batsman makes room and swings and misses, a tough would have sent it to third man for a four
there's more! India are sweating here, Steyn backs away from the stumps and swings and shovels it just over wide long-on
makes room and swings to the on side but Nayar saves a couple of runs! Good dive
full on the stumps and he drives firmly but Tyagi's there at cover to cut it off
maximum! This is getting interesting, Parnell stays at the crease and scoops a pitched up delivery over long-off, clean hit! 19 off 10 game on folks
full on the off stump and driven down the ground to long-off
cleverly played! He knew there was no slip and he exploited that gap, sways back and deftly angles it wide of Dhoni, now they need 26 off 2 overs
makes room and pushes it down to mid-off and Steyn sets off but scampers back
now Parnell finds the gap, he swivels to club a good length delivery on middle stump, there's nobody patrolling deep midwicket
full delivery and pushed to long-on
makes a bit of room and goes for broke, the ball sliced high and hard off the face of the bat and finds the vacant areas at deep cover
swings and misses and the ball hits his thigh, quite high and you can't give those out
Lot of you are questioning Dhoni's tactics. I also think it's time he takes off Raina
chips it in the air but the ball drops short of the long-on fielder
