  • It was the 1532nd Test in cricket history.
  • It was Sri Lanka's 110th and England's 778th Test.
  • It was the eighth Test between these two sides. The record now reads: England 4, Sri Lanka 3, drawn 1.
  • Umpires Rudi Koertzen and BC Cooray were officiating in their 23rd and 21st Test respectively.
  • Aravinda de Silva when on 7 completed 3000 runs in `home' matches. He was playing his 42nd Test and 69th innings. De Silva became first Sri Lankan and 35th batsman in all to do so.
  • England's first innings total (387) was its highest in a Test on Sri Lankan soil. This obliterates the previous highest of 380 at Colombo SSC in 1992-93.
  • The third wicket partnership of 167 runs between Nasser Hussain and Graham Thorpe was England's best for this wicket against Sri Lanka beating the 112 run-partnership between Graeme Hick and Robin Smith at Colombo SSC in 1992-93.
  • Nasser Hussain (109) became only the second English captain to score a hundred against Sri Lanka after Graham Gooch who made 174 at Lord's in 1991. Obviously his innings is the highest by an English captain on Sri Lankan soil beating Alec Stewart's 63 in the first innings of Colombo SSC Test in 1992-93.
  • Graham Thorpe (59) on 2,completed his 4000 runs in Test cricket. He was playing his 65th Test and 118th innings. Thorpe thus became 22nd Englishman and 68th batsman overall to do so.
  • Muttiah Muralitharan (4-127) was conceding 100 or more runs in an innings on 29th occasion. He is now only two short of England's Ian Botham's record of 31 such occasions.
  • The seventh wicket partnership of 93 runs between Kumara Sangakkara and Kumara Dharmasena in second innings was Sri Lanka's best for this wicket against England. This obliterated the previous record partnership of 74 between Chandika Hathurusinghe and Rumesh Ratnayake at Lord's in 1991.
  • The eighth wicket partnership of 53 runs between Kumara Dharmasena and Chaminda Vaas in second innings was Sri Lanka's best for this wicket against England bettering the previous record stand of 29 between Champaka Ramanayake and Rumesh Ratnayake at Lord's in 1991.
  • Chaminda Vaas (36) on 16 completed his 1000 runs in Test cricket. He was playing his 47th Test and 68th innings. He became 16th Sri Lankan and 359th batsman overall to do so.
  • With this Vaas also completed the coveted allround double of 1000 runs and 100 wickets. He became first Sri Lankan and 35th player overall to do so.
  • Graham Thorpe completed his 2000 runs in away matches when his score reached 29 in second innings. He became 18th Englishman to do so. Wally Hammond with 4245 runs from 41 matches holds the record for England.
  • The wicket of Nuwan Zoysa in second innings was 100th for Darren Gough in `away' matches. He was playing his 25th Test. Gough became sixth Englishman after Ian Botham (157 wickets in 43 matches), Derek Underwood (152 in 44),Bob Willis (149 in 49),Syd Barnes (126 in 17) and Brian Statham (104 in 33) to do so.
  • Nuwan Zoysa became 12th Sri Lankan on 14th occasion to bag a pair (duck in each innings) in a Test. He, however , is the first to Sri Lankan to suffer this fate against England.
  • Darren Gough has now taken his tally of wickets to 11 in 3 matches against Sri Lanka which makes him the most successful English bowler against Sri Lanka alongwith Ian Botham and John Emburey .
  • England was winning a Test by three wickets or less for the 13th time in its Test history. It has won three Tests by one wicket, four by two wickets and six by three wickets.
  • The defeat was Sri Lanka's second closest in terms of wickets. They had also lost to Pakistan at Faisalabad in 1991-92 by an identical margin.
  • The win was England's seventh in a Test under Hussain's captaincy. Hussain has now won two Tests against West Indies and one each against New Zealand, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
