Mullaney 'honour' at being named Nottinghamshire captain

Allrounder Steven Mullaney has been named as Nottinghamshire's club captain, taking the helm from the retired Chris Read.

Mullaney will lead the side in the County Championship and the Royal London Cup with a decision to be made over the T20 captaincy when it is known whether Dan Christian, who was in charge for Nottinghamshire's T20 Blast title success in 2017, will return for next season's competition.

"It's a huge honour and a privilege to be asked to be captain of such a great club as Nottinghamshire, and one that has such a long and proud history and tradition," Mullaney said.

"It's an illustrious list of names that I am following in the footsteps of. Hopefully I can live up to the expectation of being Nottinghamshire captain and can deliver more trophies.

"It's something I will give all of my energy to. If I can do half the job that my predecessor Chris Read has done for this club in the last 10 years, then I'll be a happy man."

Mullaney joined Nottinghamshire from Lancashire in 2010 and the past two seasons have been especially impressive. In 2016 he passed 1000 runs in the Championship then last summer scored 620 runs alongside claiming 25 wickets in Nottinghamshire's promotion success.

Mick Newell, Nottinghamshire's director of cricket, said: "I'm delighted that Steven has accepted our offer to be Club captain and believe he will do an excellent job

"One of the key things for any captain is to have the respect of those players around him and he certainly has that with the performances he has produced since joining the Club.

"Should Dan Christian return as one of our overseas players for T20, as we hope he will, then he will captain that side, but Steven will lead us in the other two formats."
