The latest intake of seventeen players to the national academy in Grenada was announced today. The ten-week programme begins on June 15, involving eight weeks at St George's University followed by a two-week tour.
The programme was originally due to begin on May 15, and was intended to be free of age restrictions, and to focus on potential candidates for the 2007 World Cup. However, a number of the players who were being considered had already signed contracts for the current English season. The decision was then taken to revert to the process of nominations by the territorial boards from which the West Indies selectors chose the final group.
The board and the academy have designed the programme, which also includes personal development skills. During this period, the focus will be on the development on the mental, educational, physical and technical side of things. Roger Harper, the former Test player and national coach, will be one of the specialist coaches including a number of other former Test players.
