At Hobart, December 10. Tied. Toss: Australia.
Pakistan staged a remarkable late-order revival that culminated in the left-hander, Asif Mujtaba, hitting a slower ball from Steve Waugh for six over mid-wicket to tie the match. When Salim Malik was fifth out at 123 in the 36th over, Pakistan needed to score at 7.5 runs an over to reach their target. Mujtaba and Rashid Latif gave them hope with a stand of 68 but 17 were still required when Waugh started the final over. He dismissed Mushtaq with the first delivery. Mujtaba and Aqib Javed collected five each off the next four, leaving Pakistan seven short before Mujtaba let fly.
Australia's innings had been handicapped by the run-outs of three key batsmen, Jones, Steve Waugh and Martyn, but it received an unexpected boost during tea when unofficial scorers in the press box convinced officials that a run had been missed. That apparent trifle proved crucial.
Man of the Match: Asif Mujtaba.
