The crop-over celebrations continued yesterday on the cricket field.

A jubilant Barbados Under-19 cricket team took the trophy in the three-day final of the Nortel Networks West Indies Youth Cricket Championships. The Bajans, having taken first innings honours, were able to pip Trinidad and Tobago in the drawn match at Kensington Oval yesterday.

It was the first win at junior level for Barbados since 1991 when Floyd Reifers team captured the crown in Jamaica, and the first time at home since 1988 under the captaincy of Livy Puckerin.

After the game, manager Darnley Boxill sang the praises of his team.

No credit is too high for the guys, an elated Boxill said. We played as a team. When the chips were down we fought back. I think that the boys truly deserved the victory.

Yesterdays triumph made Barbados kings of cricket in the West Indies, following the senior sides Busta Cup triumph earlier this year.

It was a festive time for the local lads with captain Ryan Hinds and Kurt Wilkinson adding 214 for the sixth wicket as Barbados reached 341 for eight declared in their second innings.

Hinds slammed 120, his second century of the championship, while Wilkinson made his first century for his country 119 retired hurt.

Today they go after the One-Day title with an opening round match against the Nortel Development XI at Bank Hall.
