Blain Urges Morrison Recall
AUCKLAND -- The New Zealand cricket team's bowling problems in
India have prompted Auckland coach Tony Blain to label as
"shortsighted and bizarre" the decision to shut the door on
experienced seam bowler Danny Morrison.
Blain pointed to the evidence from India where Heath Davis
returned to his erratic ways and Andrew Penn performed like the
novice he is.
He said the mediocre showing in the Independence Cup made a
mockery of the New Zealand selectors' decision to consign
Morrison to the garbage dump. The selectors and coach Steve Rixon
discarded Morrison last summer, then overlooked the experienced
31-year-old when injury-prone Simon Doull broke down before the
short trip to India.
New Zealand beat Pakistan and then turned on dismal performances
against India and Sri Lanka.
"It is plainly obvious that we don't have the depth in bowling to
make the sort of decision that has shut Danny Morrison out of all
consideration," former New Zealand wicket-keeper Blain said.
"The decision by the selectors is quite bizarre and it has
finished Danny off."
"Right now he is tilting a great deal towards total retirement.
There is no incentive for him and with him will go an enormous
amount of experience and know-how that he could have passed on to
these younger players." -- NZPA
