There is constant discussion about the future of 50-over cricket since the arrival, and explosion, of Twenty20. However, Simon Doull, the former New Zealand fast bowler and now a commentator, writes for Fairfax NZ news that it is the shortest format that should make way from the international scene and be purely a domestic product.
I think T20s have the ability to breathe life into the domestic scene and that's where their focus should be - exclusively. They should be used to draw the crowds to local games and be a pathway for our young talent, in terms of experience and wages.
Switching focus to the Test game, in the New Zealand Herald, former Black Caps opener Mark Richardson has called on the captain, Brendon McCullum, to continue doing his former job, even if he's not perfectly suited to opening. With 760 at 69.09 runs in this season's Plunket Shield, Ronchi deserves to make his Test debut, says Richardson - and that can only happen if McCullum stays at opener:
For the good of the country, Brendon McCullum must open the batting in Test matches because, if he doesn't, there is no room for Luke Ronchi - and that would be a crying shame.
Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor, Dean Brownlie, BJ Watling and McCullum would make up three through seven, so there is no room for Ronchi. Four bowlers are needed because no one in the top seven bowls well enough to play as the fourth bowler.
