ENGLAND v AUSTRALIA

At The Oval, May 24

15-Apr-1998
At The Oval, May 24. England won by six wickets. Toss: England.
England were dominant in the field once again, restricting Australia to 249 for six on a first-rate batting track. Four of those wickets fell to run-outs, including that of Mark Waugh, who had looked in ominous form as he scored 25 at a run a ball. Waugh had also run out Taylor, to add to the captain's problems with the bat. Bevan and Gilchrist resisted the lemming instinct in a fifth-wicket stand of 113, but they could not score quickly enough; Bevan found the boundary only six times in his unbeaten 108. After Knight's early demise, Stewart kick-started England's innings by charging at Warne's leg-spin. He eventually became Warne's only victim of the series, but Atherton was on hand to guide his team home with a century, only his second in one-day internationals.
Man of the Match: M. A. Atherton. Attendance: 16,066; receipts £486,106.
