Yet initially they seemed to be heading for another defeat. Batting first on a difficult pitch in damp conditions, they were in a mess at 75 for six, Broad bowling his ten-over spell for two for 14. Perhaps England thought it was too easy, and let them off the hook: a couple of misfields started the rot, then they allowed Elliott, in his second one-day international, to revive the innings with a grafting fifty. Mills provided a late flourish with 47 off 40 balls, New Zealand scored 32 off the last two overs from Anderson and Wright, and the momentum shifted as the tourists followed up with new-ball wickets. England's batting was hesitant, and then panicky after Pietersen chipped to midwicket; four men fell for two runs, the impressive Southee causing the structural damage. Collingwood did his best with a battling 34, but New Zealand had scented victory, their fielding was better, and they were not to be denied this time.
