DUBAI, April 11: A summit of cricket captains from the nine
Test-playing nations is to take place in London on July 11,
according to Indian cricketing circles.
The second summit is being organised by the International
Cricket Council (ICC). The first one was held in Calcutta on the
eve of the 1996 World Cup's opening ceremony.
There is speculation here that the captains may use the
opportunity to explore the possibility of forming an
international players' association. The proposal has come from
three high-profile captains: Wasim Akram (Pakistan), Mark Taylor
(Australia), and Courtney Walsh (West Indies). These three
captains are also worried about playing too much cricket,
leading to early burn-outs, injuries to players and the blunting
of fans enthusiasm for the game. They have publicly called for
cutting down on cricket, specifically the one-day matches.
Sachin Tendulkar (India) and Hansie Cronje (South Africa) also
believe that one-day games should be spaced out, and that a mere
one-day break between matches is simply not good enough.
Apart from the five, the captains' summit will also be attended
by Stephen Fleming (New Zealand), Alistair Campbell (Zimbabwe),
Michael Atherton (England), and Arjuna Ranatunge (Sri
Lanka).
