The ECB's decision to postpone its squad announcement by 24 hours raised many eyebrows, and highlighted that there are still matters which need sorting. However, David Graveney, the chairman of selectors, gave little away.
Talking on Sky Sports, Graveney insisted there were still "issues to resolve", and as the team doesn't leave for the Caribbean for six weeks, they still have time to make some important decisions. He did, however, confirm that the announcement will take place tomorrow at midday.
"I apologise for upsetting the media, but there are still some issues to resolve," Graveney said. "We still have to assess the situation with our pace bowling and the injuries of some players. It's important we make the right choice as it's difficult for the medical staff to give extensive treatment while on tour."
He continued: "Andrew Flintoff is 80% fit and although questions have been asked about his heavy workload, we need him to be out there all the time." On Simon Jones, Graveney was positive. "I've seen Jones bowling at Loughborough and he is very fit. He has recovered well from his horrific injury and is bowling fast. However, we need to see how he does on the A tour to India".
On the issue of taking two spinners, Graveney said he would personally take two, as the wickets are slow, similar to the subcontinent. However, we will have to wait and see whether Duncan Fletcher and Rod Marsh agree.
