I worked as a teacher at Wolborough Hill School in Newton Abbot, Devon,
for 7 years (1974-1981).
It is a school with a great cricket tradition (Roger Tolchard, Roger Twose)
The headmaster's mother-in-law was/is Lulu, W.G. Grace's
grandaughter. His great grandaughter was/is called Marianne.
In the headmaster's lobby were Grace momentos including the famous
"century of centuries" plate, mounted cricket balls and bowling balls
with plaques on them. Lord's would kill for them.
We played a Staff vs Boys game each season, of course. It was a happy
event and the booze flowed. I went into the scorer's hut to take over for
a short time when I noticed a bag with "WGG" imprinted on it. I bent over
to open it (maybe a bat of his in there?) but in my amazement had forgotten
that I had a can of lager in my hand! I was bowled for 0 by Roger Twose
in that game.
