The Indian physios are competent enough to treat the players, but the
techniques they are using are outdated and therefore, it would be a
wise decision on the part of the Board of Control for Cricket in India
(BCCI) to appoint a physio from a foreign country, opined Craig Smith,
the physio of the South African cricket team on Monday.
In an exclusive chat with this correspondent, Smith, however stated,
"I don't doubt the efficiency of the Indian physios. They are well
qualified. In the modern era of computers, X-rays and MRIs, your
country does not lag behind".
The 34-year-old Smith hails from Cape Town. He has been with the team
for the last nine years. His term as physiotherapist with the South
African team expires in April and there is every indication that his
contract will be renewed. "My contract with the UCBSA (United Cricket
Board of South Africa) is on a year to year basis. I was first
approached by Ali Bacher in 1991." He holds degrees of Bachelor of
Science (Honours) in Physio and Sports Medicine.
Smith does not ignore any lapse on the part of the player as far as
their fitness is concerned. The result? "All my players are one
hundred percent fit. They really work very hard to keep themselves
fit. During the off-season in South Africa, the players do exercises
on weight training and jumping. They are also asked to take proper
rest during break periods. They need to have rest to keep up their
fitness level" opined Smith.
Smith may not be carrying much ultra modern equipment with him.
However, he has in his possession the latest LPG machine for
massage. This suction massage machine helps in regenerating blood
supply during players' injury. He has also been using a special kit
for the injury.
Smith has been to this country before. "I came with the South African
team in 1991. I like this country very much. India is a good country
full of culture and history. The people, atmosphere and grounds are
very good. The people are always helpful. I would love to come again
and again to this country" signed off Smith.
