Leading New Zealand strike bowler Simon Doull was recognised for
his excellence at the New Zealand Crciket Awards in Wellington
last night but his Northern Districts team-mate Bryan Young was
curiously overlooked for his batting feats.
Doull won the DB Draught Player of the Year and the Winsor Cup
for Outstanding Bowling in test and Shell Trophy matches. The
27-year-old Hamiltonian became the first ND bowler to win the
cup since Richard Collinge in 1975 - 76.
Doull took the most wickets (31) in this summer's seven tests,
and the best average of 21.38.
But New Zealand Captain Stephen Fleming pipped Bryan Young for
the Redpath Cup, awarded for the best batting in tests and the
Shell Trophy.
Young's innings of 267 against Sri Lanka in Dunedin was second
only to Martin Crowe's 299 on the all-time New Zealand test
list, and his aggregate and average were superior to Fleming's.
Fleiming's only claim was that he achieved greater consistency
than Young in the tests, six times scoring more than 50 compared
to Young with four.
Fleming also won the Walter Hadlee one-day international batting
prize.
Chris Harris headed Wellington's Heath Davis for the personality
of the year, and Gavin Larsen for the Hadlee one-day bowling
trophy.
