Scott Newman's undefeated 91 squeezed
Surrey over the line in a thrilling encounter against
Kent at Canterbury to leave them in the play-off position. At 158 for 6, Surrey seemingly had the match sewn up, but they panicked in the final over which was bowled by Neil Dexter. Chris Schofield, batting after splitting the webbing in his left hand, was trapped lbw, Neil Saker was stumped and Jade Dernbach was run out. But Mohammad Akram scrambled a single, allowing Newman to hit the winning run off the final delivery. A low, slow pitch played its part in a fascinating match, where ball dominated bat. Dernbach removed Kent's top order and they laboured to 159. However, in turn Kent took the pace off the ball through Dexter, Simon Cook, James Tredwell and Martin van Jaarsveld and clawed their way back into the match. Newman, though, proved the difference.
Durham moved top of Division Two with a comfortable seven-wicket win against
Derbyshire at Chesterfield. They raced to their target of 196 with more than 12 overs to spare, Michael Di Venuto hitting 64 off 51 balls and Kyle Coetzer supplying a steadier 54 off 60. Derbyshire failed to build on a solid base of 126 for 3 after Phil Weston (51) fell to Gareth Breese.
