Pakistan one win away from facing India in ICC Champions Trophy
If Pakistan wins the second match of its One Day International series against New Zealand in Lahore on Monday it will be in the same group as India at the ICC Champions Trophy 2004
ICC Media Release
29-Nov-2003
If Pakistan wins the second match of its One Day International series against New Zealand in Lahore on Monday it will be in the same group as India at the ICC Champions Trophy 2004.
Victory on Monday would guarantee Pakistan third spot in the official ICC ODI ratings on the day from which seedings for the 12 team tournament in England next September will be determined.
It would mean that on the crucial 1 December cut-off date Pakistan (3rd) would be grouped with India (6th) and Kenya (10th).
If Pakistan loses to New Zealand on Monday it will fall to fourth in the ratings behind Sri Lanka and will play England (5th) and Zimbabwe (9th) in the ICC Champions Trophy first round next year.
Unless West Indies loses to Zimbabwe on Sunday, defeat for New Zealand on Monday would put it in the same group as Australia for the second ICC Champions Trophy in succession.
If New Zealand wins on Monday it will definitely hold on to seventh in the table, grouping it instead with South Africa (2nd) and Bangladesh (11th) in next years tournament.
The final grouping will be confirmed after Mondays match.
Matches in the ICC Champions Trophy 2004 will be played at The Oval, Edgbaston and Hampshires Rose Bowl in England from 10 to 25 September.
The tournament schedule and ticketing arrangements will be made available in early December 2003.
Groupings will be based on ICC ODI Championship standings on 1 December 2003 as follows:
